  • An outstanding chart (via InterestArb) shows the gaping chasm that's opened up between the U.S. employment picture (not so terrible) and Treasury yields. Priced as if nothing will ever go right in the economy again, Treasury prices may one day look down to see they're far out past the cliff's edge. Things are going a bit right this morning, and the long bond yield is up 5 bps to 2.76%. TLT -1.1%[View news story]
    What's your rationale?

  • Facebook (FB) +1.9% AH after disclosing in an 8-K Mark Zuckerberg has no plans to sell any shares for at least 12 months. In addition, directors Mark Andreessen and Donald Graham have no plans to sell save for tax-payment purposes. All three will be eligible to sell following this fall's lockup expirations. Facebook also states it plans to report Q3 results on Oct. 23. (more on FB[View news story]
All this does is introduce a new lockup expiration date 12 months from now!

  • Why And How I'm Shorting Treasuries [View article]
Your central thesis seems to be that Treasuries are in a bubble. While it will burst, right now it is being blown up by two powerful forces: (a) the Fed clearly signalling that they will Twist to keep yields low (b) foreign money seeking shelter from the Eurozone. Betting against both (a) and (b) requires staying power and just a little more capital than you always will have.

  • Ross Levinsohn is expected to be named Yahoo's (YHOO) permanent CEO, the L.A. Times reports, while adding Yahoo's board is discussing the matter today. The scoop is hardly surprising, given chairman Fred Amoroso's support for Levinsohn, and Jason Kilar's apparent lack of interest in the job. As interim CEO, Levinsohn has been busy putting his mark on Yahoo, shaking up management, settling a patent feud with Facebook, and striking a flurry of content deals.  [View news story]
I didn't know the Yahoo board named permanent CEOs.

  • The Active Bear: An ETF That Actually Shorts Real Stocks [View article]
Interesting. Let me make sure I understand. You start week 1 with no positions. At the end of 2 weeks (end of Week 2), SPY has outperformed HDGE. You do nothing at that time and continue to do nothing through Week 3. On the Friday of Week 3, you buy SPY (irrespective of what happens during that week). Correct? When do you sell SPY then?

Increasing search market share is not the same as increasing revs. Nobody with a phone clicks on ads - that is the problem ad-funded Web companies are facing as people go mobile.

Long Silver John, you're deluding yourself. You are correct that ETFs and stocks carry counter-party risk during a black swan event. But during truly apocalyptic times, how safe do you reckon your bank vault is going to be?

Bill, no offense, but there is nothing specific here to GOOG. The article can be summarized in one line: "ATM options of any stock carry the most premium. Sell them if you think the stock is range-bound within the premium but beware of risks".

Eric, your data focuses on real prices. Nominally therefore the market need not go down. How do the same charts look like in nominal terms?
