Select Comfort Q4 2007 Earnings Call Transcript
During 2006, the "management" decided to give the retail stores a "younger look" and began systematically replacing their successful, older, mature retail staff with younger ones. A mistake and also against the letter of federal law. The vast majority of customers would rather buy a $3,000.00 bed from a mature, stable individual than a flighty Euro-trash looking kid, but SCSS felt that could be surmounted by using the "sell by numbers" sales approach. They felt that this approach would allow them to hire monkeys to robotically sell their upscale products while giving the stores a younger look and, also, the ability to reduce commission rates for new hires. Wow! Sounds good. But, with inexperienced MBA's at the wheel, SCSS went down in flames with their new marketing strategy. The MBA's are gone now, but the problems remain. Those are the facts. Pretty typical in todays business circles. No, I am not a disgruntled former employee, and I am extremely gruntled.
