Who in the U.S. Gets Hurt the Most by Food-Price Inflation? [View article]
I was at the grocery store this weekend behind a food stamp recipient. The family was a man, woman, and three children under 5. They paid $2.56 for an overflowing grocery basket of food.
I don't get food stamps, because I work. My basket was $123.94.
So who's getting hurt worse--the food stamp recipient (who's subsidized for 90+% of their food budget) or the working stiff who doesn't qualify for food stamps?
A year ago, my basket would have cost me less than $100. It looks to me like my food costs are up more than 20%.
It's hard to imagine how a food stamp recipient can spend less than $2.56 on a grocery basket.
