My experienceis as follows. I retired in the spring of 2002 with a nice buyout. I almost instantly lost 25% because of the market. I started management of this money that I put into an IRA. The value of that IRA has grown to over four times the original amount. At one point not too long ago it was worth over 5 times. My secret is very simple, I invest only in stocks that have a minimum of 5% or more. Invest those div's. in other stocks. I invest only into stocks have a five year div growth history except some which div is quite volitile. I then look into what causes this volitility to make a decision. I've had some losers too, but not many. Right now is a great time to get into the oil related companies.
