Masterful retelling of the old tale. Greed always seems to be one of the roots of the problem. Adam Smith was right that greed needs to be restrained, only this won't happen in de-regulated oligopolistic markets where banks can literally get the money right off the printing press. The paranoid greed of the American upper class has bled the consumers too dry, who then default and clog up the credit needed to make those speculative derivative gains.
