      Paypal Holds Sellers' Funds Hostage
"Traffic is down 20%, but does that have anything to do with the current recession? "

Not entirely true for seasonal sales. I have been busy contacting ALL my past customers and inviting them to special sales on my site and on other sites I list on. Just had some nice big sales on Bonanzle and my own website is doing very well indeed. On the other hand, the few items I have on Ebay - that I paid fees thru the nose for - are lanquishing there with few hits and no bids. Those are the facts and its becoming evident to other sellers as well.

Ebay's glitches ALWAYS benefit them only! None of their glitches has ever hurt their bottom line! Most of these glitches are never spoken about unless they are uncovered by us users.

TRUE - Paypal works wonderfully well on other sites. I've had it on my website for years with NO problem. Its only when Ebay sales are involved that things seem to go "haywire".

I have some items on WIGIX. It may be good for ipods and such but it fails as far as artwork. I've been there from the beginning...even helped them make up the index for their arts category. I wish them luck but for art and collectibles they'll have to change their business model to accomodate these categories.

@ Tippie - can't understand what you're talking about. I just bought a 41.95 computer program on Amazon...not only got free shipping but got a 20.00 rebate too! Can't beat that! I've been happily buying on Amazon for years. The items you purchase directly from Amazon qualify for the free shipping.

I think Ebay's board better call around to the local booby hatches....they've definitely had a recent escapee or two or more and they're now impersonating management at Ebay! I stopped selling there because Ebay buried my listings and I have a 100 percent 10 year reputation with no negatives! Their excuse was I did not get enough feedbacks in the last 30 days. They are using any excuse they can find to rid the site of small sellers. I just hope when they're thru destroying the site we all once loved, and they are finally swept out, that there will be enough of ebay left to go back in and rebuild it once again. Ebay is paying a horrible price for "innovation" that has continually backfired this year! This coming holiday season will tell the tale. Donahoe makes how much???? I just find it utterly amazing! LOL

      The Skype's the Limit
This is what happens when a company has so much money in, spite of their poor management - they want to run out and buy every shiny little thing that catches their eye. Add to Skype the china syndrome - where they threw millions into china and gave them free listing fees...all paid for on the backs of all the other sellers who are gouged fees! .....and they want to put Whitman in as secretary of the treasure???? What a big fat joke! Or let her run for governor of california ....yet another big fat joke!

      No Christmas for eBay Sellers
Dinah I could tell immediately that you are an ebay seller. You know the nitty-gritty. Other articles I've read are so canned - so full of ebay talking points that they are an utter joke!

I'm one of those small ebay sellers who is winding down my listings on Ebay and will list there no more. I've had my standing in the listings lowered from "raised" to "standard" and now can't get views or bids. I'm a 10 year seller who has never had a negative in over 3,000 feedbacks and my DSR's are 5.0 across the board...so much for being a good seller! Ebay's explanation is that I didn't have enough feedbacks in the last 30 days so my standing was lowered! We were told in January that this new "system" would rid the site of bad sellers - that they would eventually fall in the listings until they were gone and good sellers would rise to the top. Well, that's not exactly the truth - its another John Donahoe blatant lie! The truth is that big box sellers and large powersellers will rise to the top and the rest of us - no matter what our reputation - will be smothered. We are only allowed to PAY THE SAME FEES! This is the major reason why small sellers are leaving.

One other cold hard fact is that I can sell so little on Ebay now that it is actually profitable for me to list on several small sites that offer free listings and between those and my own website I'm doing pretty well. Now, my main marketing is in getting ALL my old customers to buy from me on my own website. This is something I suggest every small seller do - reach out to your customers, tell them where you'll be - offer them discounts and free shipping (you can if you aren't paying Ebay's fees)! Its slow going but its coming along and I expect to have a decent holiday season....no thanks to John Donahoe! Don't buy on Ebay until Donahoe is gone and the ship has turned around and is back on course!

      eBay: Getting Something for Nothing
"The fact remains that there is still no better place to sell or buy your vintage 1977 Led Zeppelin shirt"

Do you REALLY think so? Many small sellers are giving up ebay because that is no longer true. As a 10 year seller who has never had a negative in over 3,000 feedbacks and with DSR's of 5.0 across the board I am being forced to give up Ebay! Why? Because they are effectively hiding any items I put up. I simply don't SELL enough items to warrant getting decent exposure in their search engines - though I'm allowed to PAY the SAME FEES. What you'll see with their Best Match are the big box sellers and the powersellers. Ebay is driving off small sellers in this same manner. We were told at the beginning of the year that bad sellers would drop in the listings and good sellers would rise to the top! Well, what they really meant was big sellers would rise to the top and the rest of us could go hang! Right now I have the same chance of selling on ebay (and paying their exhorbitant fees) as I have selling on a number of other sites for free!!! THIS is Donahoe's plan for Ebay! He's killing off the very heart of the business - the very reason why most people shop there and the reason why sales are DOWN! Don't buy on Ebay!

eBay in the Basement - But Not for Long
This is very true even of small sellers. They are building other sites the way they built ebay - and they are directing their buyers to these other sites as well as to their own websites. I agree that ebay traffic will continue to decline because all of these sellers used to be buyers on ebay - not anymore! Don't let ebay say its the economy either...sales on my website are good! I'm afraid Ebay is getting just what it deserves!

eBay's Bill Me Later a Bad Idea
Your article is dead on except for one thing. Donahoe knows how he enrages the sellers BUT he is under the delusion that sellers are a dime a dozen and totally replaceable and he can afford to lose however many it takes in order for him to institute his grand plan! What Donahoe doesn't get is the fact he is reaching "critical mass" - the point where most sellers throw up their hands and say enough is enough and I'm out of here! Its happening more so every single day but like Nero, fiddling while Rome burns, Donahoe is oblivious. This man, single-handedly, will be Ebay's downfall. Is nobody in authority over him? Donahoe is driving away Ebay's precious small sellers and destroying the very heart of Ebay and he's simply allowed to run rampant! About the most any of us can do is wait....perhaps when the present management is finally and completely swept out then we can go back in and rebuild the company we loved so much. If that doesn't happen then Ebay is doomed!

eBay: Bottom Is a Few Months Away
pwrsellr - you hit it right on the head over and over again...but then, you're an experienced seller and you know the real ebay from the inside out. These analysts cannot possibly understand ebay or how drastic things are becoming there...they can't possibly and yet they spout off figures like its gospel. Ebay's core is still the foundation of its business and that foundation is FAILING. I'm a 10 year seller who can't even get views on my items due to best match. Best match, in the end will be heavily weighted toward Ebay's diamond sellers - the very sellers who pay little or no listing fees and have miserable sell-thru rates. Donahoe is killing a once vibrant company with a half-baked attempt to turn it retail. What do you think "disruptive innovation" means? It means disrupting the workings of a successful company and turning it into something else!!! Without a vibrant core there will be NO money to buy things like Skype or Bill Me Later. You can't build a house on a rotted foundation and that's what ebay's core has become! Right now they are inflating the number of listings by offering 35 cent fees for 30 days - that only causes sellers to list things that have been sitting around in their Ebay stores. The listings look great...the sell thru - is dismal! No good sell-thru, no revenue, no money to buy things like Bill Me Later or pay the salaries of the remaining 10,000 workers! You'll see more layoffs, you'll see more sell offs and finally you'll see lower fees and maybe even rescinding of some of the super-restrictive policies laid on sellers! Its the only way Ebay will keep any sellers! I believe (and a lot of other sellers do too) this cannot be done with the present management. The present management caused this problem and are willing to plod on to total destruction rather then say they've been wrong!

Yeah - he's righting the ship SO much its in danger of turning completely upside down!

Tell you what I foresee...I foresee a healthy company that merely needed tweaking mismanaged to the point where it self destructs. I foresee John Donahoe gone by the end of Quarter One 2009! Let's just see which one of us are right ;-)

eBay: Triple Whammy Weighs on Stock Price
I fear what we're seeing is the beginning of the end for Ebay. They've disillusioned their sellers - in fact, they've been kicking small sellers around since January and now its reached a point where most of them can't make enough sales to warrant listing on the site. I know last year was great for me...I hovered just below the powerseller line - which is no small feat since I make everything I sell - but since January I can't give my stuff away! So, after more than 10 years of constantly selling on Ebay I now have to list elsewhere. Rather than list on Ebay and watch my items roll off without good search exposure and without bids - I'm better off at the small upstart auction sites. Generally its free to list so whatever sales I make are mostly my profit. It'll be awhile before any of them comes near the selling power that Ebay once had but I'm confident one or two of them will excel and Ebay will be long forgotten.

I think this was a very reckless path that Ebay took - I know they've been gearing up for this change to retail probably since 2004...but they never thought that by losing sellers they also lost buyers too. Sellers buy as well as sell on ebay and now that they are leaving, their customers are following them! I'm sure they wanted to keep us and milk us for fees until they were ready to kick us out and go retail completely - I'm glad to see it backfiring. I'll miss the old Ebay - for 10 long years I thought it was a friend. Business is business and I just can't make sales on that site anymore!
