Nice article! More need to understand this.

  • Is an overbought market reason to sell? The S&P 500 (SPYactually outperforms across a range of periods following a move 10% above its 200-day moving average, writes Ryan Detrick. Still he notes, the last 2 times the S&P was this overbought brought nasty corrections - the index nearly 10% lower 6 months later in each instance. [View news story]
Ryan Detrick also tweeted this: "Cool chart from @Rocky_SIR that shows $SPY spent most of '90s 10% above 200-day MA. Rallied hard." Contradictory information.

There are, but if that's all you've got, then you don't have all the facts.

It's interesting how people always advocate taking the emotions out of investing, and then we see articles like this designed to play on and perhaps manufacture fear.

Well, I'm glad that this has sort of been resolved.

The CRA is partly to blame for sure, but many lenders were not beholden to the CRA, and were making sub-prime loans anyway. People that believe it was only the fault of the CRA haven't really looked into it.

Every President in modern times has tried to expand home-ownership. That includes Bush. He did get on the regulation bandwagon when the problem was brought to him to his credit, and Democrats should have gone along with more regulation.

I agree with you Gary, though when a major piece of analysis is "wrong-headed," you can be sure that the rest are at the least suspect. So many SA articles consist of authors just trying to look smart.

  • Dividend Growth Strategies For Younger Investors [View article]
I'm 40, and just started investing in this past year. I'm still working out the best plan. The winning strategies in my mind seem to be value investing, low volatility, and dividend growth investing.

I recently studied David Fish's Dividend Champions looking at volatility and return using http://bit.ly/qt93Bo. UHT,
SHW, AWR, MKC, VAL, KMB, HRL, CINF, UGI, BKH, ATO, and CLX returned in total [including dividends] 36.4% (over the period of the last year) (277% greater return than the S&P 500 return over the same period) with volatility of 7.4%, which is less than the 10.2% volatility of the S&P 500 over the same time period. When I reformulate my portfolio, I may try going this route. I like the idea of a low volatility dividend portfolio.

  • $800 Google: Bargain Or Bubble? [View article]
"literally on fire"...that was funny. I haven't heard of a fire at Google either. :D It's "figuratively" on fire. Glad to already hold Google. I don't know that I'd get in right now either, and I'm ready to sell if I see my profit drop below a certain dollar amount, though I'd probably turn around and re-buy it as soon as the pullback hit bottom.

  • Microsoft CEO Makes Stunning Statement About Surface Pro Tablets [View article]
Somebody probably covered it already, but the statement was qualified: "In an environment in which there's 350 million PCs sold..." Ballmer is clearly understanding that the PC is still the dominant player. There's really no getting around that fact.

Tablets are...kind of a lame idea: a screen with no keyboard. How would it dominate without the fast functionality of a keyboard? The tablets would have to be bigger to have the full functionality of an on-screen keyboard that allows you to work fast. That's why -for the small tablets- there are so many add-on keyboards to make the tablet into a laptop. A laptop is a PC, and the PC is still the most productive computer for a lot of business.
