"Cliffs are in fashion this fall," economist Ed Yardeni writes. Not only is there the fiscal cliff, there's the political cliff and the revenue cliff. “If they fall off of it,” says Yardeni, "so will the profit margin." Which makes for an earnings cliff too. Then there's the "capital strike," described by Barclays' Barry Knapp as industry's reluctance to invest until we know the election result and whether the fiscal cliff will be averted. Spot on Joe, Obama certainly looked like he did not want to be there and appeared very uncomfortable. I am re-re-watching right now. There could be trouble ahead for Obama. We shall see...

That is precisely what I am saying. The exchange rate was $1 U.S. = 4.3-4.5 Argentine peso, but on the "blue market" its about $1 = 6-6.5, It would not surprise me if $1=7 would be on the table, especially with the open market ban. Although I consider myself a risk investor, there is no way in God's green earth that I am willing to try to locate a person that will pay be an extra few pesos, LOL. Not in these times and days. I will take my 15-20% profit and I will be happy. The economy in Argentina is already into another recession. I think I will stick to bringing U.S. dollars back home and keeping them in the safe. Only a few more months and my wife and kids will be here in the U.S. with me. But we will still have the house in Buenos Aires.

It's funny you ask about Argentine banks as most family and friends in Argentina have withdrawn all of their money from banks, just like we have seen in Greece, Spain, and Italy. It comes at no surprise with global concerns. Argentinian debt has been in bad shape. President Kirchner came under the spotlight more so with YPF after failed efforts to revive the economy with oil production. Further frustration with the farmers in regards to taxes. Argentinian government has placed an open market ban on the U.S. dollar, a stranglehold, so that their Central Bank could scoop up as many U.S. dollars as possible. It is understandable, in a government perspective, but not in a public perspective as this inhibits the common citizen from limiting losses of the depreciating peso and offsetting with the U.S. dollar. I usually fly back home with about $10,000 (or maybe more). We keep our money in a safe. The Argentine peso has depreciated so much, just like the Brazilian Real.

I certainly agree with you VC that there are common misconceptions about South America. There are a lot of close-minded investors that are fooled by the news media and get spooked. It is wonderful that a very educated author like yourself can now educate the masses and bring the positive light. Thank you again.
I am glad to hear that you plan to return to Argentina, I will be back home the last week of this month through the second week of September. We are celebrating my baby girl's first birthday then its the bautismo! Her birthday is 9/11, crazy huh? Well, regardless la vida es la vida :).
I agree Argentinian wine is very good, and the trip to northern Argentina has always been on my list of things to do. However, we make a yearly trip to Chile, and let me tell you...the best wine on earth! I am still hoping to make my way to Colombia, have not made it that far north, ever.

Great article Ross. I think the patent issues will be resolved shortly. The recent bio bear market this month offers investors now a significant discount after major market sell-off, it's only a matter of time we start to see the run-up as the PDUFA approaches in July, then it could be off to the races. Long AMRN.
