  • Ben Bernanke's Tightrope Act [View article]
There's an interesting section in Richard Duncan's THE DOLLAR CRISIS which explains just how Japan's ministry of finance worked with Bernanke to lower interest rates there. :

my ocr is down...but oh well..
    "
By early 1999, the japanese government had infused 10 trillion yen (83 billion USD) in capital into the banking industry.

In addition to that, the gov. spent aggressivley on fiscal stimulus programs to suport economic growth. In 2002, japan's deficit is expecte to amount to more han 7 % of Japans' GDP.

Now, there are growing concerns about how much longer the Japanese government will be able to continue its aggressive fiscal stimulus campaign. No other industrialized country has accuulated such large government debt in the post-war era. Tehse and other concerns prompted S & P to lower japan's credit rating twice in 2001 and a third time in 2002. Japan is not alone in its fiscal distress. many countries areound teh world are in distress- often resulting from systemic banking crises.

In May 2003 , Gov Bernanke visited Japan and conducted a series of meetings. he made a speech which stated that, in his opinion, the Fed would do whatever it took to keep the US from falling into deflationary recession, even if that meant printing money and buying treasury bonds to drive down their yields at the long end.
Between Jan 03 and end of march 04 BOJ printed 35Trillion Yen which the MOF used to buy US $320 BILLION. wITH those dollars, the Japanese authorities bough US dollar-denominated assets, most probably US tREASRY bonds and agency debt.
Was the BOJ/MOF conducting Gov Bernanke's unorthodox monetary policy on behalf of the Fed? There is no question that the BOJ created money on a very large scale, as the Fed would have been required to do under Bernanke's scheme.

  • Select Chinese Stocks Have a Way to Go  [View article]
Google had some sort of really terrible news today; it had to do with some company they're working with, not being compatible with I don't know what, I 'm not sure , some sort of real junky stuff...

As far as China, like India, it's up God knows how much over the past couple years. Given the current credit conditions worldwide, it's a matter of time before the markets over there have a severe correction too. At the rate the HS loses points, which is often 2 or 3 or even 4 percent on any given day, a big news story could send the Asian markets tumbling.
Not to squeeze you too tight with my strong frame, but it's happenned before in the not-too-distant past and it's bound to happen again int he not-too-distant future.
Our dollar may be in a very low place, but it's given Asian markets a HUGE boost. Also, US and foreign investment in Asia has also seen those markets grow. If too many investors start pulling out for one reason or another, it's going to be bad news.
don't forget how notorious banks in China are for their BAD LOANS

  • Dell: Where's the Turnaround? [View article]
Well, you gotta understand Michael Dell grew his business in the post-97 tech bull market. He doesn't care THAT much whether he'll be in line, or how fast his stock apperciates...He's a smart fellow who knows he can keep the company going and knows that a customer base changes over time. At the same time, he does have to be conscious of his costs and does have to reclaim market share.

Jeez, if I'd been the CEO, I would be tired as heck of proving myself in the marketplace.

So, to make a long story short and reach my long await break, Dell is hoping that he'll go back up when tech goes back up. My conjecture is that he knows and understands that his CPU's are expensive but also knows that they're a quality product and even if his pricing causes his stock to drop the quality will win out in the end, like it's done for hundreds and thousands of big-name tech companies.
I just hope he doesn't have any stress issues.

  • Friday Outlook: 'Helicopter Ben' Unimpressive Thus Far [View article]
    On the edge of sleep
I heard voices behind the door
    The known and the nameless,
    familiar and faceless
My angels and my demons at war
Which one will lose - depends on what I choose
Or maybe which voice I ignore
