Are You Short or Long China?
The big question is whether China is "de-linked" from the US economy. If we head into a deep and long recession, how will this affect China?

Before, when everything was looking great the China story was all about globalization; but now that our economy is looking terrible, we say China is de-linked. We cannot have it both ways.

How to Solve the Housing Crisis
Now that's thinking outside the box! You are correct that it does come dangerously close to selling citizenship, but I like the idea.

In the past we have needed only hard-working immigrants, but with the current account deficit we now also need cash, so your proposal does make sense. The product we are selling are our institutions of freedom and democracy-- and they do have real value.

      A couple caveats:

One, these well-healed immigrants would need to pay cash.

Two, since the incentive may be for the very wealthy (think Saudi sheiks) to buy houses for all their kids and relatives, some provision would need to be made on various limits (age, level of disability, criminal records, etc.) and these would be very difficult to make statutory and enforce.

      Good thought problem, though.
