With the world population slated to rise to 9 billion (50% increase from now) and much of it in China and India planning to use fossil fuels, we will pass the point of no return unless something drastic is done now. There is a small hope of finding a way to take the CO2 out but probably that won't happen.

Most of the world will never reach the US standard of living but they don't have to as even a 1950's standard will demand large increases in energy use. That energy must be clean and as renewable as we can make it (nuclear is "clean" but not renewable). The developed countries must drive it and push the developing countries to follow (even if at a slower pace) or we will have the gun to our heads.

Would I exchange food for gold? No, unless I had more than I could eat before it goes bad. I can't eat your gold and normal food will last a month or two (cans - until eaten). Using something for money assumes that most of the world keeps functioning and will accept gold or silver for exchange or local farmers will take it. It is possible that if the USA goes down, so will the ROW. That seems to be happening now to some extent on at least a financial basis.

If the stock market goes to zero, then the country's economy will go to zero since companies and transport will not be operating. If gold goes sky high then gold and silver producers should go the same way. I don't believe this will happen.

These are just thoughts, I don't have the crystal ball (one of you guys took it). ]]>

I have to hand it to McCain for standing up to his rabid dog audience in a town hall meeting but Bush has been a lying SOB from the first. He wanted no regulation and he got it. He has fought to repress and modify any report that said Climate change is real and mostly man made. He has cost us trillions of dollars with bad policies. Our workers are supposed to compete against people making a dollar or two a day and living in dorms.

After Obama is elected, we still must stop illegal immigration, and have national health care, get rid of the 41,000 lobbyists in DC, start a massive project for energy independance and get rid of our crazy tax system. The reason most countries have lower business taxes is they use a VAT system on consumption. We need to stop the income tax and use VAT so people will save and invest.

2) Tax churches. Religious groups are constantly involved in politics and government law making. The Catholic church wants to have open borders for example.
3) 60% of Medicare expenses are done in the last 6 months of life. This is not due to the dying but because of the children who won't accept it. This must stop.
4) Stop tax give aways and pork projects.
5) Get out of wars, they are breaking us while everyone else basically sits them out.
5) Raise taxes on the rich. Yea, they are paid too much already so raise the limit to 45% above $300K ( or somthing in that area) and index to inflation. Or:
6) A better way would be to stop income tax totally and use a VAT on goods sold. This would be better all around and would promote investment instead of spending.
We must pay down this debt and stop the idiotic financial losses due to greed.]]>

Objectivity, I think you should just back off. All energy comes from the sun and everything is just storage, so contribute something useful, thank you.

Single people will want a car that can cover a long range and I don't think it will be all electric (unless it is very small) for a long time. This will keep hybrids or PHEVs viable. There are companies like Cyclone Power CYPW that are bring new combustion engines to market. Another one is Turbine Truck engines TTEG. ]]>

There is a place for the new lead acid batteries and that is in the local storage area where power is generated by solar or wind. However, this is too costly for mass generation farms.
Base load infrastructure will need to be increased by use of Nuclear and probably clean coal and geothermal.

69% of oil usage is in transportation and that is the main area that must be addressed. This is where Li batteries will be used and HEV will have a large market. For hybrid cars and large trucks, we can use new engine technology (see AXVC, TTEG, CYPW) that can burn most liquid or gas fuels. ]]>

China is a good example of a country securing energy sources. Many countries are and have nationalized their resources and with growing internal demand, they will export less. Again, china is a good example of this.

The Bush and Regan adminstrations were basically pushers for corporate control fo resources both here and abroad. Regan undid any initiative Carter started to have us become energy independant. The US will be disabled because oil is no longer cheap and Bush had driven us into deep debt so corporations and the Military Industrail complex could make billions.

This government has failed us and even though we should drill for oil in places like off shore, this will be temporary and may give us more time to build up alternative energy. Most of the American population (I am a citizen) are fools. They never want to do something becaue it will change the future, just get the most now. Once the results of bad decisions happen they is an outcry of how can this happen? I have tried to talk to a number of people about issues, none will listen (this does not include most people on these boards who are concerned). I have suggested reading books like The Long Emergency (Kunstler), Confessions of an Economic Hit Man (Perkins), etc. There is no response to my emails. These are mostly highly educated people.

Over the next decade the US will have to change dramatically and to reduce oil imports we must get on some other fuel. Hybrid cars will be the first step. Hydrogen, may be the second. Those that say that hydrogen is just a storage medium are like someone stating a few pounds of Uranium can't possibly produce much energy, just look at how much coal it takes.

We must hold down population as well, there is too much immigration and too many groups that have large families. We are invaded by illegals and now, because of the Latino groups like La Raza, the Catholic church and business groups, our border has been open for far too long. Yes, many Americans are fools.]]>

Can Saudi Arabia Push Down the Price of Oil? http://seekingalpha.com/article/82150-can-saudi-arabia-push-down-the-price-of-oil?source=feed#comment-189690 189690 Speculation is most definitely a part of the price rise. Witness the price of housing or any bubble that was driven by speculation. Oil has more parts and is a declining resource but saying speculators out for quick money are not there is ludicrous. Require a 50% margin on futures and watch the price fall. Of course the trend is up because little was done to demand efficiency. Cheap oil has led to waste and a public mindset of use it now and let the future take care of itself. Drilling along the coast is needed and the excuse that it would not help in the short run is like saying we should give amnesty to illegal aliens because we can't deport all of them (so deport half of them). In 10 year we will need that oil for the long transition and drilling must start soon.

Finally, we need to greatly slow immigration and stop illegal immigration. Finally, Bush is doing one thing right but Obama and McCain are just panderers to Latino special interest groups. Population growth is the main reason resources are running short, do we really need more people here? The future is now here. ]]>

Cold or hot fusion might eventually save the smaller world but it is not likely to help with oil depletion, only fisson can contribute to that. Solar energy in the form of thin film should have low production costs but central solar farms that use concentrated light for heat and generation may be cheaper to build.

Mark W makes some good point but I will disagree on a minor point. If you have almost unlimited heat from fission then it doesn't matter too much that you go thru energy state changes like described. This just part of the efficiency equation. PVs are not very efficient so who cares that they produce power directly. They still must go thru a conversion process to make AC, this is around 95% to 97% efficient at best.
I'm all for PVs and they will contribute to distributed power, we will need all forms of generation. Two major kinks will be power storage (for non base load sources) and distribution system which are not keeping up.
Without population control, we are shooting ourselves in the foot. Maybe China doesn't use as much as we do but they also live at a much lower standard.

Since our whole nation and economy is built on cheap oil, this will cause a great deal of pain. Total oil reserves are estimated a 2 trillion barrels of which over 1 trillion (the easy half) have been used. Many producing wells are now in decline and any new sources are much harder to get to. World demand is rising and many countries are controlling oil for national purposes. Even Iran knows that oil is limited and needs an alternative source of power. Political situations and competition for oil will itself drive up prices. Out of the remaining amount of oil, we may only get 50% of it because it takes energy to get it out. All of this points to an upward trend. What thing would make it go down? Will there be some massive, easy to pump oil discovery? Will there be a giant slump in world demand? Will the US suddenly get huge sources of alternative energy and have everyone in HEVs in the next 5 years? HEVs will demand more electricity. I don't see much to drive oil down.]]>

Black Gold or Yellow Gold? http://seekingalpha.com/article/80535-black-gold-or-yellow-gold?source=feed#comment-181607 181607 There is a crisis brewing and many of you see and that is due to two causes religion (which for its own benefit, promotes population growth) and formerly cheap energy due to oil. Both have created the population explosion which can no longer be sustained but is supposed increase to 9 billion. Read The Long Emergency by James Howard Kunstler for more.

My sister, who is a caring person, is typical of many Americans. When I told her to read the above book, she declined because she doesn't want to read depressing books. When i asked her how much gas she uses, she didn't know (drives a Hyundai SUV). She would never vote for Obama and voted for Bush two times. I love her, but we are doomed.

Is the US Dollar Doomed? http://seekingalpha.com/article/78732-is-the-us-dollar-doomed?source=feed#comment-173847 173847
I tried to convince people not to vote for Bush II, who must have cheated on every exam, they were just too stupid to listen.

I have written many emails about illegal immigration and its costs with less than a year of stepped up inforcement. Even now Finestein (CA) added an amendment to the war funding bill to legalize 1 to 2 million more illegals. Lou Dobbs found it and the Senate got it removed before they voted.

Stop illegal immigration, greatly slow legal immigration (expecially from Mexico), start massive investment in renewable energy and infrastructure, get out of Iraq, get the debt under control and ban lobbyists in congress. It will only happen with a massive change in our government. There are some good people there like Jim Webb we need to keep but will we find more leaders like him?

Green, renewable power has been developed, but slowly, because of stupid energy policy. There is a point about some enviornmentalists stopping ANWR development but we needed gas to go to $4 a gallon to get anything done. We need stable but not much lower oil prices. So far we mostly have just heard BS from congress and as usual, nothing useful from the pres.
