Garmin: Clearly Something's Not Right

yesterday's WalMart guidance re: year to date earnings:

"Our initiatives in electronics have improved customer access to leading brands and made Wal-Mart the retailer of choice for entertainment products," Castro-Wright added. "The U.S. stores continued to generate triple-digit comparable sales in flat-panel TVs and GPS units, as well as double-digit growth rates in laptop computers, video games and digital cameras."

Garmin Hits New Lows, Despite Booming GPS Biz

Check out Garmin’s web-site to see how they’re selling pure software for Blackberries, Nokia and now Samsung. Garmin also has a growing fleet management line of products to assist businesses. Nuviphone, dedicated PNDs, Avionics, Marine, hiking/fishing, pet monitoring, real time traffic and weather, collaborations with Google, etc. - the diversity of their product offerings is amazing. They are poised to make big money off those who want dedicated PNDs AND those who want smart/cell phone GPS. Buy the stock now while the media herd universally adopts the Jim Cramer universal gadget theory of Garmin’s demise. The fools don’t understand Garmin’s business and spend too much time with urban techno yuppies who think nothing of plunking down $800 every year on the latest unigadget. The rest of us prefer more cost effective technology solutions that are user friendly and tailored to our needs.

Is the GPS Golden Age Already Over?

I agree with the first post: mp3-enabled phones have not decimated ipod sales nor have cell phone cameras eliminated the popularity of dedicated digi cameras. PNDs are here to stay. Consider the possibilities: taxis, package & pizza delivery, retiring and traveling boomers, rental cars, teen, pet and furlougee monitoring, aviation, marine, hunting, cycling, fitness, etc. Use your imagination re GPS and you should be able to see how important this technology is likely to become. Garmin is already doing many of these things with growth. Universal gadgets are too expensive & complicated for all but the biggest gadget heads and people would rather have dedicated, user friendly devices tailored to their preferences that can be upgraded piece meal.
