AMZN is buying Twitch Interactive, a gaming property YHOO was interested in too. Does the increase the potential that YHOO looks more closely at buying GLUU??

The two are different plays in gaming but that begs the question at the moment.

So in effect export the corporate tax base AND the personal tax base too by putting the management in exile. That's brilliant don't you think?

Send ALL of the money out of the country but continue to increase spending on social programs and more regulation. Not sure what planet the Democrats want to live on but it doesn't sound like the one I am on.

All of this can be fixed by revising the ENTIRE tax code. Too bad the citizen base can get behind a group of 535 people that can work together in the absence of impotent leadership and constant campaigning from the White House. We have only ourselves to congratulate for this situation.

  • An End To Our Relationship With Yahoo, A New Era For Equity Research [View article]
With all due respect Mssrs. Hoffman and Jackson - do you have critical mass to cut SA off from the dominant instant financial information source in the US?

I hope you have done the proper analysis for the audience that comes here for the same thing - stimulating (read as not always correct) analyses.

Alerts and the like are great tools but as pointed out above it is cumbersome to set multiple watch lists across information sources.

You have a good product and seemingly reasonable brand recognition. However I can tell you Yahoo has sent me to SA far more often than I visit based on the alerts. I am not sure you have the required critical mass; I presume you gentlemen ARE sure.

Bruce, I hope you are correct in your prediction of doubling again in five years time.

If you are, I can retire on this holding alone which I bought just short of 30 years ago, October, 1984. This was one of five biotech stocks on which I did a comparative analysis for a graduate school class in investments.

  • AT&T: Competitive Environment Doesn't Preclude A Good Investment Opportunity [View article]
Good thinking. The writing may be on the wall that they cannot support this dividend into the future given the competitive landscape.

As long time T shareholder, it may be the right time to look elsewhere.

I believe this also does not trigger capital gains taxes for ABT shareholders as it does for holders of ABBV.

Allergan would have been a better fit for Shire in my opinion.

No impact on your IRA assets.

Outside of an IRA, for tax purposes the treatment is similar to a sale. Capital gain occurs between the shareholder's tax basis and the price of MDT the day the deal is closed. The position then has the new price as the cost basis going forward. MDT will provide a form that has the new information; most companies post it on their website or it can be obtained through the Investor Relations department.

    A dog?

I invite you to look at the long term growth of MDT. This company has had a pretty solid track record of growth and increased dividend payments to shareholders.

I wish I had a few more "dogs" that have been this rewarding. I have confidence in the management to stand behind their predictions and meet them. They always have in the past.

My grandmother bought 300 shares of MDT in 1969 for a little over a $1,000. Today that position is 3,840 shares with a value tonight of more than $230,000 (dividends were NOT reinvested in MDT). That's hardly a dog Morrie.

Some don't believe in buy and hold, but I can assure this is but one example of these kinds of returns I now enjoy through the wisdom of those that came before me.

It will be a big tax hit for many long time shareholders who are now retired. The strain will be on cash flow for MDT holders as there is none following to them when the transaction closes. The cost basis is stepped up and the gain is taxable. This may also impact estate planning for some.

In general inversions are good for shareholders as long the tax burden can be covered without being oppressive. That said, some will have sell a portion or take other capital gains to generate the funds to pay the tax related to the MDT transaction.

  • Medtronic buying Covidien for $42.9B [View news story]

In addition to Big Thunder's comment, shareholders will see this in the documentation that will be provided to vote on the merger.

I learned this the hard way when JAZZ made their move back in 2010 if I recall correctly.

For some, these inversions create a cash flow challenge to cover the tax as there is none forthcoming from the registration change.

MDT holders should note as this is an inversion, capital gains taxes will apply to your MDT holdings when this transaction closes.

While there is a lower tax rate after the transaction closes, the IRS will extract their due from the shareholders.

For those that hold both MDT and COV, well, you get to pay on both sides of the deal.

  • UQM Technologies: Update After Quarterly Earnings And Management Meeting [View article]
I have a long history with UQM. 15 years ago we were enamored with Lee Iacoca and electric bicycles. More recently it was all about Coda in Korea which morphed to Audi and military vehicles for the our war efforts. Now it's China.

What we have is a product that is great but we lack a leadership team, historically and today, that can identify a viable strategy and execute.

We'd be better of to sell or license the technology to a team of people that can execute. Some that come to mind - GE, HON, PH, BWA, JCI, MOG or UTX just to name a few. It's time to be out of the hobby like business mode some of us have endured since the mid-1990's and get it into real commercial use.

  • Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Inc. misses by $0.06, misses on revenues [View news story]
I posted this is on Tuesday after the earnings announcement on another SA JAZZ thread. The correct information about the earnings was available elsewhere.

I had the same question so I dug around a little bit and found this article:
    Earnings positive but missed expectations........
About the CFO, that seems odd. Having been released with similar terminology myself, somebody wanted her to move on and not of her own accord. Given the focus on acquisitions and the skill set of Mr. Young it's apparent where they may headed and I think you want your CFO to reflect that experientially.
