Can Anything Displace the iPhone in Consumer's Eyes?
I agree with comment #1 - Peter Cooper. It's so easy to forget who really makes up the user base. Most iPhone customers are far more interested in the fact that it now comes in white than whether or not it's open. Eavesdrop on some conversations in the Apple Store and you'll know, they don't even know it's NOT open, or what open is.

Android will appeal to the linux boys. But the iPhone has the Apple marketing machine behind it. Macs are stealing market share from Windows at an amazing rate, not linux. I'd expect Android to experience the same thing.

How Will the Market React to Apple's New Macbooks?

I'm long but I think the stock will continue to fall after this event. I doubt there will be much that hasn't leaked already. And anything short of a tablet is going to be disappointing to Wall Street.

Looking down the road - they'll easily beat for this quarter but the forecast for the holiday quarter will take another ten points. aapl is on sale for those who dare. I'm scraping together everything I can.

Netflix May Dominate The Online Video World, But With What Business Model?
This is how easy it would be for Apple to apply the Netflix subscription model to video downloads:

Why the studios are so willing to distribute easy-to-copy DVDs instead of pushing iTunes DRM is beyond me.

Did iPhone Sales Pass 10M Already?
erstwhile said Apple is TRYING to morph into a retailer. Hello - they generate more revenue than any other retailer. How long have the others (Gap, Sony, Bose, J. Crew) been at this retail game? How many other PC makers have tried retail and failed spectacularly?

Apple is a tiny ball right now, but it's a snowball Mr. erstwhile. This blip will pass....

Apple Investors: The Bottom's Not In - Just Yet
I suppose there will always be folks who are more comfortable trading on charts and points of "resistance" - which no doubt exists. But your points of resistance mean nothing when key events come along, like the introduction of Boot Camp - to send a stock like aapl soaring...

I'm far more comfortable investing in a company with a plan, leadership, proven products, future potential, partners, and solid fundamentals - like the current P/E. And a big pile of cash. Your charts seem to contradict the notion that past performance is no indication of future results.

Also, I think you're throwing aapl into your stories just for the click-count of the fan base. It's pretty obvious in this story.

Apple: Though Tempted, I Wouldn't Bite Just Yet
Roger - it boggles my mind that someone like Buffet has NOT seen the light here. And what about all the analysts with price targets of $200+? Don't their own institutions buy big on their advice?

In 1990 I knew Intel was going to be huge, but I didn't have any money. I'm not going to miss out on aapl.

Hard to argue with this one. I thought aapl would find its bottom around $120, so now it's not hard to picture 80. Recent history suggests you're dead-on with regard to the next forecast and the street's reaction.

That said, when is Wall Street going to recognize that quarter after quarter of growth is not a fluke? Over the next few years Apple is going to invade more and more homes, eating into MS. It doesn't seem like the market can ignore the undeniable upside to aapl - but it's exactly what they've been doing.

      Apple in the Bargain Bin
I bought first thing this morning. I've bought all over the map. As low as $15, as high as $170. And several places in between.

I believe Apple is one of those companies you look back at and say, "If only I'd gone with my gut and bought. I knew they were onto something..."

I'm a true long. They are executing well, bringing diversified businesses together vertically. aapl has a lot going for it.

Apple TV: It Could Be the End of the Line
I like my Apple TV, but I could easily live without it. I have Netflix, which is quite a deal for someone who doesn't watch tons of broadcast TV. The Netflix Roku is a bust though.

Nextflix brags about the 10,000 titles that are available to "watch now" over the Internet. Almost NOTHING in my queue falls in this category. It's the obscure stuff that's available that way.

The Apple TV needs some nurturing. It has more capability. Apple needs to grow it, not abandon it. The current hardware has more tricks that it's capable of. Come on Apple.

Android: It's No iPhone, But It's Close
Did you actually LISTEN to music on it? Because this G1 phone doesn't have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack included. Oops.

This thing is still totally experimental, not even a blip on the iPhone radar screen. (no, iPhone doesn't have radar. yet.)

iPod Touch: Is It an iPod or iPhone?
bigmoney- I don't see the ultra-portable as competition for iphone/touch. Do you? If I could do things like read CF cards and connect a BT keyboard to my touch maybe I could leave a laptop behind on certain trips. And coffee outings. As it stands I can't.

I really hope Apple has something well underway that bridges the gap between your machine and an iPhone. For all the talk about the iPhone being a computer --- it's a crippled computer at this point. All the potential in the world is there, but it needs to be let out!

As for linux ---- I've tinkered with a couple distributions on some really crappy hardware. From what I saw it isn't ready for anyone who doesn't like to tinker. At least I didn't see a version that is. I'm not saying there isn't one out there. But my take is that something needs to change if they're going to gobble up any consumer market share.

iPod Touch: Is It an iPod or iPhone?
I have a touch because I'm under contract until the spring. I'll be getting an iPhone when the contract is up.
Both are an incredible leap forward for handheld devices. My only problem with the touch is that wifi in Charlotte NC isn't as widespread as one might hope.

I don't know why so many people, "expert" pundits included, expected the touch price to drop below that of the iPhone. No subsidy! When you hold this device in your hand, when you see how slick the touch interface is, you know it costs some serious money to manufacture. I've seen other "touch screen" phones - they don't even come close in usability. The iPhone and touch are miles ahead, I just don't know how long Apple can maintain the lead.

I look forward to Apple taking advantage of all the flexibility this platform offers. The Remote app makes my other Apple toys (Apple TV and an Airport Express connected to my stereo) that much more useful. I've been wondering what took so long for a wifi remote to materialize. I know there are a few out there. But this one can't be beat for simplicity and potential upgrades. I can navigate the Apple TV interface without turning the TV on -- which is great for music.

The new touch addressed issues I have with my first gen. Hardware volume controls were added. And a speaker - although it's probably not the best speaker. The lack of direct volume control on the first gen iPod touch might have bothered some hardcore iPod users. Problem solved.

This comment is all over the place. But here's what I would take away from considering the questions raised in the story: Apple has multiple pieces in place that work well together to make accessing your digital media more like a living room experience should be. Apple TV, Airport Express with Air Tunes, and touch or iPhone as a remote. It's a slick and reasonably affordable system when compared to other pieces you might shop around for. And it works with the computer (Mac or PC) that you have now.

Apple should showcase the Remote app in some ads going into Christmas. It might boost Apple TV sales.

Does a Mobile Internet Devices Market Exist?
Kris23 - even though I think the iPod touch and iPhone are the BEST handheld Internet by far - I still find both strenuous for anything in depth. But a 6 in screen - that's tons more real estate and I think it would make a huge difference in readability. I'd rather take an oversize iPhone on a trip than a laptop...
