Legg Mason: Earnings Good at First Glance, Ugly After That [View article]
agree LM is still struggling. I held a significant investment in LM but lost faith in management after 5 negative quarters and conference call shpiel that didn't make sense. They had a disaster with the SIVs and had to take on a couple of billion dollars of debt to escape it. Lets face it, an asset manager should not need lots of debt. i switched out of LM into AB, much simpler business, no debt issues or SIV's. Funnily though, since jumping to AB, they have reported better results than LM but LM has rallied much more! It interesting that the biggest rallys have occured with the companies with the most debt and shakiest earnings, do fundamentals mean nothing to todays investors???

People don't realise that the charge-off are masking very good growth in transaction processing, for instance network volume has doubled since 2004, people don't seem to realise this. They also have plenty of cash once charge offs stabalise and could return some of that to shareholders. The other potential is as an aquisition target. In July, its 2 years since the spin-off

You're comment about the fed buying up the housing industry is not such a stupid idea, if the government bought up all the unsold new construction for social housing, things could get interesting!
