    The big problem with COF is that they don't own the network like axp and dfs, they they don't get all that fee income to help offset loan loses. DFS and AXP are better bets. DFS having the more growth potential long term.

    HJ, thanks for your analysis. Been long dfs for some time. People don't realise that the charge-off are masking very good growth in transaction processing, for instance network volume has doubled since 2004, people don't seem to realise this. They also have plenty of cash once charge offs stabalise and could return some of that to shareholders. The other potential is as an aquisition target. In July, its 2 years since the spin-off

    My comments only related to dfs and axp, i wouldn't touch most other financials with a barge pole. You've got to look closely at the individual company level. Only other financial i have is MCO.

    still long dfs, mainly becasue litigation settlement will carry them through the next 12 months. After that if the economy hasn't at least botomed, i will start getting worried. Very cheap at 3xearning too

    Funny kind of bailout, why not lend Bear Stearns the money it needs? situation must have been horrendous to sell out for $2. Someone posted that their Manhatten office cost $750million!
    I'm now seriously thinking of buying JPM, they've just got a bargain, plus they are going to make a killing with Visa IPO.
