Long Awaited Sirius XM iPhone App Available, Sans Howard Stern [View article]
I've got 5 subs with this company so I'm not a regular basher.
BUT - This has to be one of the biggest mishaps the company has ever made. Stern available to stream online if you're on a computer but not on the Iphone??
Wi-Fi: Satellite Radio's New Frontier [View article]
I agree about halfway.
We still need radios outside of the car and the Iphone is not a universal device. Accessing the online stream through any phone won't happen anytime soon.
What we do need is for the retail radios to evolve. Any new radio needs to have Wifi. I would buy the XMP3 if it had Wifi. The Stiletto is great in my gym because I can still access wifi if no signal.
They also need to go after Slacker/Pandora by getting embedded in DVD players, TVs, etc through internet or wifi connections. That is where I think they are really dropping the ball.
5 Reasons to Anticipate a Sirius XM iPhone Application [View article]
I'm getting an Iphone this summer so I'm stoked about it.
However, I think it'll just be a mild success. The competition with Slacker, etc makes this a tough swallow to bring on incremental subscribers. For existing subs - fantastic. A good way to keep us around. For newibes, not so much.
Stern fans - already on board. All of the other content is iffy as far as 'exclusives'.
The big win would be to get MLB and NFL through this App and I doubt that'll happen.
It will still be a few years before the 'internet for dummies' consumer can really grasp internet radio in a car. Sirius XM will take off bigtime once they get more specifics out to subs and more importantly - take back retail!! We need new, exciting receivers and portables to get Sat Rad hip again.
You've got to figure Sirius has had months and months to strategize and will be executing major programming moves immediately.
Here are the biggest issues in my mind - > Getting on the Iphone with as many channels as possible. Great value add for subscribers and makes it attractive to new subs. > Stern Factor - SIRI needs to get Howard on XM radios ASAP and not wait for the interoperable. The ad revenue is badly needed. Full disclosure - I've got a SKYfi2 in my office waiting! > Holiday news - Both XM and SIRI have had devices lurking at the FCC. What can/can't these new radios do with the merger? > Technogeeks - XM has the better tech in my opinion. Their signal is generally easier to pick up than SIRI and the XM mini-tuner and XM-ready devices have to be considered. Here's hoping they listen to the engineers at XM!! We need new news ASAP to get consumers excited.
Glorious day for Sat Radio fans. Can't wait to see where we stand 12mos from now.
Sirius and XMSR's Six Year Prison Sentence [View article]
Here's Adelstein's strategy - > Merger about to be approved so he's looking to his career. By putting out the 6yr/25% spectrum offer, he looks like he's willing to compromise and takes care of the NAB and democrats like Markey, who literally sent the exact same thing just this week.
Tate is going to go with something much more reasonable and this thing will be done by the end of the month - finally. Then, Adelstein gets something for himself out of it. Plain and simple.
Very very sad how this thing has gone.
I've scrolled thru dozens and dozens of comments on the FCC website from everyday people all over the country and it's very clear that only the NAB/Georgetown Partners/Clear Channel/Ibiquity are against this merger.
We can cancel anytime and any day we want!!! Why do I need 'protection'??
Radio Is Doomed - Tear Down the Broadcast Towers [View article]
The other killer coming soon - internet in the car. If we could get a constant signal in the car and could then tune to internet based radio. Shut out the lights, AM/FM. The only thing they'll have left is a few special local programs and things like Limbaugh. The NAB needs to take the money and energy to improving their own product - not lobbying against the tidal wave of Sat Radio and other technologies.

A book should be written about this when all is said and done. Everyone knows that lobbyists run the show but watching this story has made me sick and ashamed of our government. This comes from a guy from Chicago - the hometown of corruption! Consumers want this merger. Has there ever been a merger so overwhelmingly endorsed by the consumers of a product??
Keep calling/writing the FCC and your congressmen.

This merger has been an eye-opener to me and I'm sure many other loyal subscribers. Sure, I knew gov't was influenced by the lobbyists but I never thought they'd be able to go so severely against the will of the consumer and delay this thing. Have you ever seen a merger so overwhelmingly endorsed by consumers? Everyone wants this except the NAB and the HD Radio people! Please FCC, give us our wish. Let us save this great thing - Satellite Radio. I'll never listen to FM or AM the same way.
Sirius/XM Merger: What Happens if It Doesn’t Happen? [View article]
One more thing - I say XM would eventually win if they stay afloat longer than Howard Stern is at Sirius. Stern was the game-changer. XM was killing Sirius until that point. If Stern retires after this contract in 2 years., XM would regain momentum.
Sirius/XM Merger: What Happens if It Doesn’t Happen? [View article]
A very sad example of how government is broken. The DOJ - which nearly everyone agreess was the highest hurdle - approved this thing after a very thorough review. You didn't see them taking meetings and getting lobbied - they just took their time and got it right. Now the FCC has the hot potato and they can't get out of their own way due to the special interests. Has there ever been a merger that is so overwhelmingly approved by consumers get held up like this??? It's a subscription service! We can choose to cut it off any day we want. No contracts.
Have we ever seen a merger dragged out so long where a documented 85-90% of CONSUMERS are in favor of approval? Even the NAB has conceded that FCC feedback is not in their favor.
5 years from now we'll laugh at this debacle while we drive down the road with our always-on internet connected radios.
The DOJ/FCC has much more important topics. Approve this merger!
