One of its tactics will be to humiliate banks that aren't pulling their weight by naming them publicly. "Some of the firms ought to be embarrassed, and they will be," Treasury's Michael Barr says. http://seekingalpha.com/news/market_currents/post/37310?source=feed#comment-782386 782386

If Dubai World's "standstill" is just that, and any damage is contained to some U.K. banks, then dominoes don't have to start tumbling. Todd Harrison sketches the somewhat worse scenario: a default leading to a flight to dollar safety, killing the dollar carry trade and causing a pile-up at the asset off-ramp as everyone gets out at once. http://seekingalpha.com/news/market_currents/post/37288?source=feed#comment-780623 780623

Too many turkeys: In a market where one-fifth of the product is consumed on a single day, turkey producers must use guesswork - and this year it's a bit off, with a surplus driving down bird prices. http://seekingalpha.com/news/market_currents/post/37027?source=feed#comment-774113 774113

In other words, fundamentals have been out the window for a while now. Calling a top based on fundamentals makes no sense. Something else is going on, and I think the primary mover is (fall of) the dollar. But how's that going to change in the near term? We got record auctions coming, and the Fed is supposedly out of the game. Indeed, the dollar has remained pretty stable over the past few weeks, yet the stocks still rallied, as has gold.

I think the end is near, but to be honest that's what I thought in May, June, August, and September.

I have no idea where the market is going, but I do know that it's got nothing to do with valuations.]]>

Chinese officials said on Friday that moves to cautiously tighten the country's loose-money policy would begin at year-end, but added that changes would be small. Separately, Sen. Charles Schumer asked the Commerce Department to launch an investigation on whether the yuan's dollar peg constitutes currency manipulation. http://seekingalpha.com/news/market_currents/post/36894?source=feed#comment-768935 768935

The New York Fed failed to use its "considerable leverage" to force [[AIG]] counterparties into concessions on credit-default swaps, says TARP special inspector Neil Barofsky in a new report - severely limiting the bank's ability to save taxpayer money. Of eight counterparties contacted by the Fed, [[UBS]] was willing to make a 2% concession, but the Fed decided all would be paid in full. http://seekingalpha.com/news/market_currents/post/36613?source=feed#comment-763141 763141 Tue, 17 Nov 2009 02:50:30 -0500 If This Is a Recovery... http://seekingalpha.com/article/173357-if-this-is-a-recovery?source=feed#comment-761576 761576 Mon, 16 Nov 2009 03:46:07 -0500 Kudos to Wal-Mart (WMT) and Target (TGT) for betting on Zhu Zhu Pets, one of the hottest toys in history. http://seekingalpha.com/news/market_currents/post/36529?source=feed#comment-761470 761470 Sun, 15 Nov 2009 22:41:42 -0500 Kudos to Wal-Mart (WMT) and Target (TGT) for betting on Zhu Zhu Pets, one of the hottest toys in history. http://seekingalpha.com/news/market_currents/post/36529?source=feed#comment-761322 761322 Sun, 15 Nov 2009 20:09:50 -0500 Place your bets: Which of the biggest economies will default on debt first? http://seekingalpha.com/news/market_currents/post/36520?source=feed#comment-760264 760264 Sat, 14 Nov 2009 12:36:21 -0500 Two More Myths About Business in China http://seekingalpha.com/article/173240-two-more-myths-about-business-in-china?source=feed#comment-759900 759900
And you can get American quality health care in Beijing if you are willing to pay US prices. But even at public hospitals I've received decent service, though crowds were bigger and the wait longer. But a doctor visit was $1 USD.

Maybe you were trying to see a particular specialist? I've heard people wait a long time to see a particular doctor that has a reputation. But you can't conclude that he "couldn't get medical care." He could have gotten medical care in a lot of other places in Beijing.

However, notice the many "No"s. This is not going to happen overnight.. The problem is once this is set in motion.... it's never going back to USD. Ever.

Chinese ALWAYS make statements before important meetings with Americans on these currency issues. They don't do it for face, they do it as a negotiating strategy. I am pretty sure that US politicians are used to it already. They make an eyebrow raising statement a few days before the meeting setting the stage. Then, usually, at the meeting itself, they strike an entirely different tone, leaving the other side unprepared. If Americans fall for this again, well....]]>

What happens is that your bankers start to worry, which CAUSES them to give you less money, under more and more unfavorable terms, which CAUSES your currency to go down even further, which CAUSES your economy to take quite a beating for the reasons which Carl explains, or .... at the very least because now you can't borrow more, you owe a whole lot, and you can't invest into anything new and productive.

Yes, you can then, if you are bold, employ hundreds of millions to make doorknobs, toothpaste, T-shirts and shoes and improve their living standard from official UN poverty level ($1/day) to a solid middle class making $12,000 2009 dollars per year.

If your vision of America's future is China's past (starvation, failed "economic" experiments and Cultural Revolutions), and you are happy that you will be able to recover from that just like China (sweatshops and human rights abuses), then, well, I don't think we have much left to discuss.]]>
