The hybrid premium was a stretch to justify over the expected vehicle life when fuel was $4.00/gal, it is nearly impossible to do so now (Prius sales have fallen 73 % from their high). The point is that there were plenty of people willing to pay that premium, so the expectation is not "ridiculous".
