Nationalizing the U.S. Banking Sector: There's No Choice

Why can't the banks just wait until the housing market recovers? How long can the banks 'legally' hold these toxic assets that accounting rules require to be marked to market? Another month, another six months, a year? Seems like everyone is just stalling to run the clock out until the problem fixes itself.
