  • Even 'Star Wars' Should Use Crowdfunding [View article]
Crowdfunding is certainly an interesting new tool to raise money for projects. However it is typically used to fund small companies and independents that want to focus solely on the actually product, and less so on profits. Crowdfunding is especially useful for movies and other works of art that have a cult following. Despite Star Wars having one of the largest cult followings in the world I doubt the 180 billion dollar company Disney could get a significant amount of money via crowdfunding, since fans who donate tend to do so only if they need to.

That being said crowdfunding for a show like Game of Thrones could be much more successful. Game of Thrones uses CGI pretty sparingly for its dragons and dire wolves, due to its cost. Many Game of Thrones fans, me included, wish to see more scenes with these exotic creatures. A crowdfunding project for just the CGI could be quite successful.

  • HTC unveils virtual reality headset [View news story]
It is interesting that HTC is partnering with Valve on this. Valve through Steam is by far the largest distribute of digital downloads of high quality video games. Steam has a tremendous reputation among gamers of providing them not only with great games at great prices but a very active community where gamers make their own mods and allow others to download them through steam.

Virtual Reality headsets is something that people have been talking about for the past decade, but if anyone can make and market one successfully to gamers it is Valve.

  • Recent Buy - Deckers Outdoor [View article]
I agree with you on the importance on brand. I am currently a sophomore in college and often see girls talk about how comfy UGGs are on local college apps like Yik Yak. They often refer to them as the sweat pants of boots.

  • Qorvo launches $200M buyback [View news story]
When a company buys back stock, they do so to decrease the amount of shares. This in turn will increase their EPS, since EPS = earnings/number of shares. Increasing the EPS increases the stock price (at least in theory) and thus creating more value for shareholders.

Glad to see them taking advantage of the current stock price, especially after they killed estimates in their quarter last week.

  • Saudi Arabia Declares Oil War On U.S. Fracking, Hits Railroads, Tank-Car Makers, Canada, Russia; Sinks Venezuela [View article]
I am aware of a bi partisan effort in the senate to increase the gas tax to raise money for the transportation and infrastructure costs. Even if this goes through, which I have great doubts that it will, imposing a oil tariff on the American people would not boat well and isn't even on the table.

  • Saudi Arabia Declares Oil War On U.S. Fracking, Hits Railroads, Tank-Car Makers, Canada, Russia; Sinks Venezuela [View article]
I would find any scenario that includes the US government imposing a tariff on foreign to be extremely unlikely. In such a scenario would cause gas prices to rise, and there isn't a politician in DC that would want to be associated with a bill that would increase gas prices.

As a consumer and as an investor in the highly fuel dependent airline industry I couldn't be more happy with the "Oil War". It will be quite interesting to see how this plays out.

  • Update: eBay - Down 6% Since The Apple Pay Announcement, And This Is Just The Beginning [View article]
I shared your skepticism about the previous so called new "competition", but this is Apple we are talking about now. As an EBay investor I became worrisome when I heard the details about Apple Pay. This is the only serious competition Paypal will face within the next few years. Apple is slow to adopt new technologies, but when they do their products are magnificent.

  • Apple's Position Supports Payment Processing Enterprise [View article]
Very interesting article. I've been very bullish on the switch from physical to digital payments for some time now. I am currently invested in Ebay for its PayPal segment as a way to play on this trend, but after this mornings announcement I am revaluating. Though I don't think investing in Apple is the best way to play off this trend, since Apple is becoming a tech conglomerate, this opens the door to investing in one of Apple's partners. It will be interesting how Apple's future partnership with the card companies will pan out. Will Apple stay true to the partnership, or try to use it just to jump start Apple's IPhone wallet then sever its partnership once it can set up its own credit services.

  • Amazon Is Coming After eBay And PayPal, Make No Mistake [View article]
Nice to see an online payment article that focuses on facts, instead of reckless speculation on how Amazon or Google are about to enter the market and wipe out Paypal. That being said, the pie growing and will continue to do so for a while until everyone stops carrying those burdensome leather things that contain that green paper and plastic cards. Competition from Amazon, Google, and other companies that may enter the online payment industry will slow Paypal's growth, but Paypal still has a lot of potential. IMHO Ebay/Paypal represents the best way to play off the physical to digital payments trend over the next decade or so.

  • eBay: A Short Idea On PayPal's Upcoming Woes [View article]
Your right If Paypal were to lose half of its revenues to new competition then Ebay would plummet. I'm not arguing what will happen if you are right. I'm arguing that your worst case scenario is very unlikely. Shorting a stock, especially one in a growth industry, based on a worse case scenario can be very risky and dangerous. You claim that history is on your side by citing the downfall of Nokia due to the rise of the smartphone. But those who interpret a history lesson and apply it to a completely different matter are doomed to fail.

Best of luck with your other investments though.
