This is not just an American problem. The new world after WW2 is reliant on ever increasing asset values and money supply and also increasing population, so that the pyramid structure stays put. We are all over the world so used to having our standards of living increase, we know no other way. People would be more willing to take pay cuts and decrease consumption only if they see the higher ups doing the same, the whole problem is that while the common man is going down, the elite is going up. This is why people are not too happy about.
