Browser Wars: What Are They Good For?
Oops. Didn't mean to post the last message twice. The Seeking Alpha UI makes it far too easy to do that (I've seen this issue many times).

"There is high level of incompatibility between browsers and designers waste incredible amounts of time to get their pages working on all the major browsers."

And adding one more browser to the mix will just make the problem worse. I've been a fan of Firefox/Mozilla for quite a while, because I thought it was good to have a well funded open source browser project competing with I.E., but it's hard to see how the benefit of another open-source alternative will outweigh the cost of having to deal with another slightly incompatible browser.

      Does Apple’s Move Impact ARM?
I seriously doubt that Apple is thinking along the lines of differentiating based on the core processor in its devices. Yes, there's potential to innovate and get more processing power/watt than the current crop of Intel, ARM, and PowerPC processors deliver, but 15 years of history would suggest that most of that innovation is likely to come from ARM and Intel themselves.

A CPU is just a CPU... differentiation comes from what you build around it. I think that Apple's recent transition from PowerPC to Intel chips validates that assertion. Their decision in the early 90's to try to "differentiate&qu... their computers by using PowerPC turned out to be a mistake in retrospect.

Palm’s New OS Plans and Apple Poaching
Palm has been talking about a more modern OS for about 6 years now.

It would be a wonderful idea to take the Palm UI and graft it onto a modern OS (like Linux) similar to the way that Apple grafted something similar to their traditional UI onto a more modern NextStep/BSD based core.

The difference between Apple and Palm, however, is that Apple is lead by a talented group of visionaries who knew how to make this happen. Palm, on the other hand, is infested by ex-3Com management whose arrogance far outweighs their talent or effectiveness. It's pretty extraordinary that they were able to take something as terrific as Palm once was and completely ruin it.

The Last Time Globalization Collapsed: Parallels to Today
Let's not blow this out of proportion. At the end of the day, most of the U.S. economy's current troubles can be traced to the herd mentality that resulted in the housing bubble. Granted, this has far reaching implications (including the bailout of Bear Sterns), but lets not use Americans' stupid decisions regarding their houses as justification that this is the end of an era of globalization. I think that era is really just beginning.
