Even if you could clearly define a particular action as socialist or capitalist to everyone's satisfaction, who cares? Have we crossed a line? Who cares? Even if you could firmly and clearly establish where that line is, we have and will continue to cross it back and forth until the end of time.
Those from the right who invoke "socialism" as the Great Satan that will destroy us and those from the left who do the same with "Savage Capitalism" are useless religious fanatics who treat the isms of economic theory as an end in themselves rather than as what they are, a tool to improve society's standard of living. Crossing lines is not only acceptable, but necessary according to current situations and events, it is not like violating the Ten Commandments.
I don't know whether this bailout is the right medicine or the road to perdition, but I really could give a rat's pitui whether it's "socialist" or not.]]>

I hope Phil is right and Americans refuse to use any more oil but that which is absolutely necessary during a break neck transition to all the alts mentioned, but I doubt it. We've become, fat and lazy, have an absurd feeling of entitlement and are ripe for any demagogue to lead us to perdition with reassuring fairy tales. ]]>

As far as red herrings like "o.k. if you are so liberal give up your wealth", nobody advocates that outside of Cuba and North Korea. All that is required is to stop the corruption, the robbing the middle class and the poor in ways both legal and illegal. But hey, most of us here will do fine and will relocate to China, Brazil or Russia with our investments once the U.S. is in ashes, so as long as you don't give a damn about that, all is fine.]]>

As for R.E., my daughter is in her early 20s and owns her own house. She would never dream of getting an A.R.M. She would never dream of having mortgage payments that are such a large part of her income that she could get in trouble if some adverse contingency came up. She would never have bought her house without doing due diligence about economic conditions in her area and median home price histories in the surrounding area.

Her daddy made sure that she knows how to do basic math and to always remember that you can't cheat an honest man (or woman).]]>
