  • Smith & Wesson Takes a Shot at 21st-Century Success [View article]
My name is Lane Crawley. Im a 25 year police administrator. Smith & Wesson needs to listen to what police officers want. This will allow the company to take back the market share they once controlled. Pistols: It is very important that the auto pistols use a striker fired mech. and the trigger pull be less than 5 lbs. The pistol must be accurate and durable not to mention light weight. The M&P is getting close but the trigger must be lighter and smooth. This will make it easier for young men and women officers to master.

There needs to be a rifle that fires a limited range cartridge like the 30 cal carbine or the 357 mag. Limited range for urban areas but will punch holes in body armor. Most of all very light recoil like the MP-5 by H&K. This is the rifle of the future. This is the rifle that will take the place of the shotgun in Law Enforcement.
You ask, whats wrong with the 223 AR rifle? Police chiefs in large cities dont want all of their patrol officers to be armed with rifles ,that if they miss their intended targets, the bullets will travel over 1000 yrds. Limited range, Limited liability!
Law Enforcement does not need to emulate the military with military weapons to be effective. The AR rifle is a military weapon that will shoot over 1000 yrds. Most police gunfights are 10-15 yrds, over in 5-10 seconds. This is why the MP-5 was such a popular weapon for a long time. Very easy to handle, soft recoil. Body armor is the only reason tactical teams stopped using the rifle. Smith & Wesson can build a better OPERATOR rifle(patrol rifle) for every patrolman in the US. A limited range rifle that Chiefs everywhere will endorse.
I know what police administrators want. Ignore the future, keep trying to sell us weapons that are obsolete and the company will fail. Just listen to what police trainers want and your company will be back on top again!
    Thanks for your time,
    Chief Lane Crawley
