The Case of the Disappearing iPhones

It might just be that most iPhones are sold through AT&T stores rather than through Apple stores. I bought mine from an AT&T store. Looks like you can order the iPhone from ATT.com and get the phone shipped on the same day. I hope we get to know why this is happening sooner rather than later.
