    I guess my question boils down to roughly what percentage of track would have to be electrified, if fairly flat and few curves for a 100% battery powered locomotive? I'm thinking NS is probably building these models already.

    Since reading the patent application a few weeks ago, I have wondered at what distance the charging areas would be apart for a battery powered locomotive pulling an "average" train on a reasonably straight and level track. Whether that would be charging 4 miles per 10, 4 miles per 20, 4 miles per 40, etc. Have thought about that "not obsessively" since NS stated that full electrification of the entire line is too expensive.

    It appears they would have to do a lot of planning for a consistent train weight and number of cars, or overbuild everything for the heaviest and most demanding loads.

    Have also wondered about how often they would have to change out the batteries and the expense of doing so with relation to the cost of diesel fuel. And just found that the average locomotive uses 147,000 gallons of fuel per year.
    Using rough figures 1,500 batteries at $400 would be $600,000 and the cost of diesel 147,000 @$4 would be $588,000. About a one year payback if my calculations are near correct.

    Just seems like we have thought that "fleet testing" was the next stage for several years now. Not sure what advanced stage testing means - maybe fleet testing.
