Apple shouldn't adjust their accounting to carter to analysts; they are too fickle a bunch.
Today a couple of them upgraded RIMM because of the imminent launch of the BB Storm; no mention of the impact of the economy on consumer sending. At least of these analysts recently citied economic concerns as the reason for cutting AAPL.

Apple already forecasted lower gross margins for 2009, and growth in the year in the current economy will not be at the levels of the past year.
So, revenue growth should be expected to slow (even if unit growth is maintained) and earnings should be expected to shrink.

Last year Apple reported $1.76/share earnings in Q1 when there the economy was is decent shape. The expectations of Apple guiding to to $1.74/share in the current Q1, given the current state of the economy is grossly unreasonable. Oct 08 08:27 AM

If AAPL closes in positive territory today.........
What, me worried? I don't bet my mortgage money in the stock market, I do not buy stocks on margin (painful lesson learnt after the dotcom bust), and my 2 German high-end autos were bought cash.
      So, no worries here.

So, your advice on going to cash would have been timely in August, not now. I went 50% cash since early summer, so I can shop now! Oct 06 03:06 PM

Apple's accounting for iPhone revenue is fine; this is one of the reasons why Apple will have sustainable earnings in the next 18 months to ride out the recession.
A true investor would understand and appreciate this, while a trader would not.

"The commission is committed to using every weapon in its arsenal to combat market manipulation that threatens investors and capital markets," said SEC Chairman Christopher Cox in a statement. "The emergency order temporarily banning short selling of financial stocks will restore equilibrium to markets."

The feds also think short sales aren't part of the problem!

UK Regulator Bars Short-selling on Financials- AP
Britain's financial regulator said Thursday it was temporarily banning the short-selling of shares in financial companies that are listed on the London Stock Exchange. Short-selling, in which investors sell borrowed shares in hopes of buying them back later at a lower price, has been blamed for sending bank share prices plummeting and exacerbating turmoil in financial markets. U.S. regulators tightened rules on the practice Wednesday.

"If I and everyone else was in an all out effort to sell AAPL stock the net effect would be to push the price up."

Really! You mean the short positions are eventually closed
You cannot escape the fact that net SELLING pushes the price DOWN, and by shorting the stock, you are SELLING.

I do not leave in a dream world; I am an investor, not a trader.

If you are convinced the stock should be going down either on its own merit or because the company's performance is being affected by economic factors, you should use Put Options, and not exacerbate an already bad situation by selling securities you do not own.
