  • We Warned You Early About This Correction, What Are We Doing Now? [View article]
It will be interesting to see why the deep water drillers should be bought on this dip. With Saudi and the like cutting the price of oil to discourage US energy independence among other political goals, a tactic tried in the past, I believe it is prudent to buy on the dip only those oil producers that can sustain in the face of 70-80 dollar a barrel oil. Many on-shore wells have relatively low enough costs but shale, deep water, and others would seem to be the first wells shut down in the face of shrinking profits. I could be wrong.

  • 2 Things You Can Do To Improve Your Passive Portfolio [View article]
But the devil is in the details, e.g., what is volatility and what is good non-correlation. It is possible to non-correlate for the wrong reason so as to get two assets that are -1 correlative and cancel each other's returns, yes? And, if volatility is the annual average deviation, I would prefer one large deviation that I can 'stop' out of rather than frequent small deviations that I can't see coming. Besides, what about past performance not being a reliable indicator of present or future performance? Because correlations change over time, one would now be obliged to refigure/rebalance at times. So, an argument could be made that even these adjustments to your portfolio move it away from passive indexing toward active management.

Well, I can only assume good intentions, but I believe that the inclusion of a promo for the book was outside the boundaries and should be discouraged in this forum. I appreciate input from all sources (including non-specific, unsubstantiated cocktail-party quality opinions) but in today's environment, I have all the advertising I can handle. Leave the ads on the left and right of the article, and put some meat in the middle.

EBIX ever get clear of its irregular accounting allegations? At one point (last fall,i believe it) was amending almost as many SEC reports as it was making. Worth checking out before getting greedy.

  • 4 Stocks Under $4 On A Winning Streak [View article]
Winning streak? AMD from $8 to $2 in 6 months? CLWR's price frozen where it is by Sprint buy-out? SPP traded at $14 in 2008, between $4 and $6 for a couple years, and then between $2 and $4 for a couple years which on my planet does not qualify as a winning streak. MTG might conceivably be going upward since it is getting its act together with debt and legal obligations. But, seriously, you guys have got to put away the hooch this far away from New Year's.

  • Algae Fuel For Regular Diesel Prices? Solazyme Makes It Happen [View article]
I agree with the concept that using produced biomass rather than waste biomass is key in pricing the SZYM oil. It is foolish to think that the cost to produce will remain constant as resources normally used to produce food are used for fuel. Also, the politicians tell us (quit laughing!) that fracking will make us energy independebt in a decade. An investor would have to chose between the two technologies, imho, and the big money is on fracking. As usual, private gain will trump public pain.

The China connection is indeed important, but even as a CLWR stockholder, i am more interested in the Freedompop connection. I am personally hoping this deal will not cause the Freedompop initiative problems.

  • The Unintended Consequences of Levying a .25% Stock Transaction Tax [View article]
The 'slim to none' chance of passage is small consolation. The same transaction fee shows up again in the National Health Care Act bill (HR 676, i think). Once our elected (one must not forget) officials get this stuff seeded in their alleged brains, it is hard to stamp out, and impossible to stamp out without someone protesting.

  • Trading Under Book Value [View article]
Just a rookie here, but does book value include 'goodwill'? If so, should a company liquidate, is there any 'goodwill' asset to distribute? E.G., Micro$oft has a jubongous amount of 'goodwill' on its books. How does it figure in the Price to Book computation?
