  • Consumers Shifting Food Purchase Patterns Into Recession Mode [View article]
If you want to know what is happening to consumer spending patterns, and the state of the economy, ask someone who knows first hand. I know a guy that works at the deli counter of a large supermarket chain, has worked there for years.

He told me people are barely looking at the name brand meats and cheeses (Boars Head, Land of Lakes, etc) like they were a year or two ago. People are buying the discount (store) brands because of the lower prices. The store is cutting back big time on their orders of the name brand products, and getting a lot more of the generic stuff.

He said the same is true for all the departments in the store... name brand products are being passed over in favor of lower priced products.

  • Boots and Coots Looking to Fire Up Profits [View article]
I am long WEL and sincerely hope you are right that thisn stock is ready to catch fire.

Not that it counts for much, but the History Channel (or was it Discovery) did a show on Red Adair and the history of capping wells & putting out well fires, and interviewed Boots and Coots. A very cool show, check it out if you get the chance.

  • Still Too Early to Buy Sirius - Merrill [View article]
I think the price for SIRI is already ridiculously low.

To all, I advise this- Get in and stay in for the long haul. This stock is going to go UP in capital letters.

Does anyone think some sort of reverse split may be in the cards, to raise the stock price to a level that large institutions would consider investing in it? That sure backfired for Sun Microsystems.

  • $5 Billion Expected in Radio Merger Synergies - Bear Stearns [View article]
I own SIRI, bought it @ $4.25, and I think it will eventually turn into a winner, but not necessarily for the points already made by others. I will hold for the time being. I wish I had waited ($2.53 as I write this), but that water is already under the bridge. I do intend to add to my position at these prices.

The root issue, to me, is the satellite communications capability being built into both companies. One of these days, cell phones will be passe and everyone will be carrying satellite phones. Imagine a company that is getting their infrastructure in place years in advance.

I think a merger of SIRI/XMSR may well create a company that will be a friggin' GIANT when that happens.

  • Greentech Media: Solar Sector Headed for a Shakeout [View article]
    Truthpeeler-

if you have a few bucks to risk on a somewhat speculative play, consider WWAT. Solar power and cleaner water- what's not to like? Note that insiders have bought an average of almost 7 million shares per year for the last 3 years. If nothing else, a small player like that could be a takeover target. But what the hell do I know?

  • Under Armour Still Overly Expensive  [View article]
Thanks for a great article. A few words about these brands- Columbia was kind of a trendy name for a while, but has endured because they make a damn good product. I am long COLM. UnderArmor, on the other hand, makes me nervous. I am staying away for the time being. Trends are great when you catch them on the way up; I don't know if UA is still as buzzworthy as it was a year ago. Maybe if they pull back (say to $30) I would be a buyer. I do know their stock is cheaper than their clothes!

  • Sun Microsystems' Next Linux Move [View article]
User- your point is taken about the amount of total money spent. Of course you are correct about that. However, in order for a small investor to DIVERSIFY there must be decent quality stocks available that do not require large amounts of capital to purchase. Or, I suppose the small guy could just purchase a mutual fund (yawn). You are also correct that splits, etc., have little effect on company value. Thanks for stating the obvious. To assert that a cheap stock price would not attract interest is something I must disagree with. Certainly speculators would be attracted, which generates activity in its own right, and money will always go where the action is. We can't all be stock market experts, so, quit putting down "amateurs", since we are the spine of the economy, and without whom so-called "professionals" would be jobless. Cheer up, because as long as there are losers like me, you can continue making enormous profits on the market. If your boss at McDonalds can find someone else to run the fryolator.

  • Sun Microsystems' Next Linux Move [View article]
Hooray for Sun's support of Ubuntu. I hope it works. Sun's performance lately has sucked big time, starting with that retarded reverse stock split a few months ago. Sun pisses me off. The so-called "experts" who engineered that particular brainchild didn't realize that Sun was mainly popular with home-gamers, like me, who could only afford to buy a stock that was under $10 to end up owning more than a few shares, and now that it isn't anymore (for the time being!!!) nobody wants to buy it at all. The logic was faulty. People who want, and have the capital, to buy high priced stocks are doing so elsewhere (Berkshire Hathaway, anyone??). The stock should have been split 2 for 1, not 1 for 4. Jerkoffs!
