Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

Having worked for global organizations for most of my professional life (30 years), I am struck by the irony of how common it is for these ‘bastions of capitalism’ to be run like communist dictatorships: a small coterie of insiders make all the decisions and send out diktats across the globe; dissent is discouraged and dissenters encouraged to leave; employees are treated like mushrooms – kept in the dark and fed a diet of manure. Problem recognition is largely left to outsiders - customers, the regulators and the media. New CEO appointments are followed by a purge/sidelining of those loyal to the previous regime. People are put into key leadership roles based on whether they are loyal to the decision maker rather than on their capabilities - relative to the role. ‘Who’ you know is more important that ‘what’ you know. Opinions are more important than facts and rumours fill in for absence of information. Wide ranging (and expensive) projects are launched because the ‘boss’ wants it – so questioning their usefulness and viability can be career limiting.
With such an approach to management, any organization bigger than a ‘mom-and-pop’ store can be considered too big to manage. It sort of surprises me that more accidents don’t happen more often.
