Well said jsh921. Anyone telling you to short Visa is a no-nothing idiot. This stock will pull back only when the market goes WAY down, like everything else. Adding a dividend was genius. The buy back of shares as well as the consolidation with Visa Europe should propel this stock much higher. The worse off the consumer gets, the more he will be using Visa to pick up the slack. Fees are the name of the game. Visa and MA dont lend money! It's a no-brainer play. Short at your own risk! Jun 13 10:21 AM

Just remember that picking stocks is no different than gambling. You do the best you can to pick a winner. Due diligence involves reading the company prospectus, reading analyst's opinions, studying quarterly results, etc. The only thing that makes a stock increase in value is the belief that the company will be making more money in the future. Valuations can seem too high but then the next quarterly report comes out and says that the company exceeded analyst's expectations by twenty percent and bingo! The stock rises 20% (or more). HOWEVER. You pretty much are at the mercy of the people that run the market. If bad news or rumors come out, shazam, your stock can drop like a rock. Ever wonder why the stocks creep up slowly in value but when it comes to DROPPING in value, the descent is lightning fast? Ever wonder why your guy at Morgan Stanley or Schwab or Lehman Bros tells you not to sell? Ever consider that possibly he wants you to HOLD so he can SHORT your shares?
I firmly believe that the market is manipulated and IMO the big guys get advance notice before the rest of the suckers hear anything. I've noticed increases in a stock from out of no where for 3 or 4 days with no apparent reason behind it and then, BAM an announcement comes out (that you weren't privy to) and the stock barely advances because the insiders already made all the profit. That old cliche of "Buy on the Rumor, Sell on the News" really means "We already took the profit and we are waiting for you to get the good news because when the news comes out WE ALREADY SOLD!" I think it's a stacked deck.
Part of Visa taking off like it did is all the HYPE. Personally, I dont care if people want to hype a stock as long as I can make money on it. I bought a LOT of Visa and I hope all the back-slapping and pep rallying continues. However, I dont kid myself that the slime can hit the fan when the market movers decide that the stock is played out. Just be sure to COVER YOUR REAR. Dont be fooled by the people who keep shouting LONG on VISA, or LONG on MA, or LONG on XYZ. Those people arent going to send you a refund if the stock falls off the board.
That said, I think Visa is as good a stock as any. It's a great company with a huge market share and IMO should grow like crazy in the developing world. Sometimes, the biggest risk is NOT TAKING a RISK. I'll hold it a year to avoid the capital gains but NOT if it doesnt climb a couple of bucks a month! And if the quarterly report comes out soft I'M GONE!!! That said GO VISA (lol)

The writer of the article on Visa, Robert Freedland bought 70 shares?! and this is 20% of his portfolio? That means the guy has about 30K invested total. Gee, forgive me but this guy has less in the market than I do in my used Chevrolet. He must be a hell of a stock picker if he can have enough credibility to appear here with a 30K portfolio. Maybe he started with five bucks?
I saw yesterday that someone bought 350,000 shares of Visa at $85. I'd love to hear THAT person's take!
Like the rest of you, I sweated (slightly) through that short lived pullback of ten dollars. Visa charged back quickly on the heels of Mastercard's reporting. I wouldn't look for a pullback in to the 70's anytime soon. I think it's a good entry price right now! The key is hanging around long enough for the stock to break out and I dont see why it shouldnt. I'd be surprised if it doesnt hit 100 quickly and possibly 150 to 200 by year's end. GO VISA!!!

      Greencapitalist,
Here's a quote from you in an earlier post:

"i am staying in cash except for rimm, few solar plays, ma and v."

In the post immediately above me you mention RIMM, AAPL and FSLR which must be your "solar play".
RIMM's PE is 61, AAPL's is 38, and your solar play FSLR is over 100. Each one of the stocks you mention has a PE ratio higher than Visa's. Yet you post here hourly that MA is far superior to Visa even though it's PE ratio may be only 5 points lower. You repeatedly characterize Visa as "in bubble status when it hits the 80's". Since you seem to only apply your investment strategy of a low PE ratio to Visa and not your other investments, I'd like to ask you a question. What are you smoking? Your posts make no sense, are contradictory and lead me to believe you are only here in a lame amateur attempt to manipulate the stock, which is laughable. Only a handful of people read these blogs. Do you blog on the FSLR board that everyone should sell immediately due to the 101 PE ratio?
Or on the RIMM board that RIMM is in "bubble status"? [Comment edited for abusive language. Commenter put on notice]

Speaking on behalf of all "bullies", since I'm their leader, let me just explain to you what draws our wrath and how to keep from being eviscerated. Dont LIE. Their are some delusional people out there who think that the best way to make money shorting stocks is to flood the stocks blog site with lies, exaggerations, half-truths and more lies. These people are dishonest punks and deserve all the abuse they get. So if you come here to a largely pro-Visa blog area and you tell stupid lies like "Visa has a PE ratio of 58 and is way overpriced", be prepared to have someone "enlighten" you with the truth. We dont have issues with anyone that expresses an opinion that isn't a LIE designed only to beat down the stock. To most savvy investors, a person doing this is obvious. Some bozo said the other day that enthusiasm about Visa was "like dot com mania all over again". Idiotic posts like that are beneath contempt and cant be taken seriously. If you just take 5 minutes and look at the PE ratios for example of some great companies like RIMM, you'll see PE ratios nearly TWICE that of Visa. A high PE ratio only reflects the investors opinion that the stock will be steadily GROWING. Anticipating growth is HOW YOU MAKE MONEY! The higher the PE ratio, the greater the number of investors there are that think the stock is going to blow away numbers and beat estimates. You are insulting an investor when you tell him "Dont buy that stock; it's PE ratio is too high". You dont KNOW THAT! That investor has already decided that his stock choice is due for growth.
I'm convinced that Visa will be beating it's estimates regularly. I've come to this conclusion after studying the company closely and reading the prospectus. So please, dont try to tell me I'm making a mistake and that Visa is too pricey. I've already decided where the stock is going and your "opinion" is not going to change my mind. You dont have a crystal ball and you have every right NOT to buy the stock if you so choose. Just do me a favor- stop the lame, negative posts with no basis in fact, or suffer the consequences.

You want to compare Visa and Mastercard? Okay, how about this:
Visa today- up 3.13% with a bump UP in after hours. Mastercard- up 2.03% with a TWO DOLLAR DROP after hours. Currently, Visa earned 3 TIMES what Mastercard did today. Mastercard gave back half of what it made today in after hours. I suspect people are switching from MA to Visa but you figure it out.

      Greencapitalist,

Let me clarify it for you: 1. You're an idiot. PE ratios are not the only factor to consider when buying stocks. 2. Everything you said about MA vs V is inaccurate. 3. You are obviously shorting Visa and you lost money today!

others views without spewing your foul language? <<

Plantinseeds, can you please rephrase the sentence above so it is intelligible? I think you had a brain freeze and attempted to say two things at once. Anyway, judging by your Christian website, I'd be willing to bet you offend easily. Actually, I thought I let Shabba off pretty easily. I've heard nastier euphemisms than "dickweed" on network television. What I should have said was "Shabba, you are a colossal pillow biter and you can teabag my scrote till my PE ratio comes down."
By the way, "Plantinseeds&quo... is often used as a slang synonym for having sex. I think you should show some respect for the others on this board and change your handle. I for one, am deeply offended and plan on praying for your soul at the next "Burning Man" brain expansion seminar. Vaya Con Dios!!!

Shove it Shabba. You're a moron and you don't understand English. No one here said "the price of the stock has nothing to do with it's earnings". YOU said that. Visa's PE is currently 36, (not 50, stupid) and Mastercard's is 32, (not 30, dickweed). So the two stocks are FOUR points different in their PE. Big f'ing deal! Google pulled back 20% but not before a whole lot of investors got rich on it! And your lamest comment was "It's like dot com mania all over again" Man, you sound like a light in the loafers, chicken little, the sky is falling nervous wreck. Either that or you must be shorting Visa and worried sick that you made the wrong bet! Go find a stock with a PE ratio of 2 and a trading range of four cents a year and load up on it. What a pussy you are! May 15 08:43 PM

I also think it's refreshing to see someone say something positive about Visa! I bought in at 64 and I'm glad I did. I think it's a great investment and an excellent long term play. The recent pullback is nothing more than the day traders deciding that Visa had peeked short term for now and they wanted to cash in. Once all the day traders have been shaken out, the stock should settle in for some steady upward movement. Just be patient. Visa is a no-brainer. I also agree that the stock will crack 100 shortly and move up from there. I see no bad news on the horizon. All the nay-sayers crying about PE ratio are full of crap. If you listen to them, you'll make the same mistake that early investors in Google made. Google had all the same bad-mouthing in the beginning and then went on to hit $700. GO VISA!!! May 15 05:22 PM
    • Visa: Near-Term Fluctuations Present a Buying Opportunity [view article]
I have to laugh when I keep seeing analysts raise their price targets on Visa! One week it's $68 then it's $94. These people will have to keep raising their estimates if they want to keep what little credibility they have. The public knows it's a winner and they know it's even a better buy than MA. This stock wont stop rising for the next 2 years IMHO. I backed the truck up 3 weeks ago and I've already made more than I had in the past 10 years following analyst's advise. $100 is a slam dunk. $150 by end of summer. $400 by next April? Ignore all their BS about number of shares and PE ratio. I'd rather be rich than "cautious" according to their lame, outdated criteria. Visa will be growing exponentially for at least the next 10 years!! Apr 30 02:06 PM
