    • Solar Gets What They Want, But Stocks Still Suffer [view article]
The fingerprints of Obama (second only to Dodd as a recipient of campaign contributions from Freddie and Fannie) are all over this affirmative-action housing debacle. Community organizer = radical agitator (see ACORN). McCain co-sponsored legislation to rein in the two GSEs but Dems were solid in their "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" support of F&F. (Not that any of this has relevance to the subject article.) Oct 06 12:07 AM
    • The VIX and V-Shaped Bottoms [view article]
Excellent article notwithstanding notation issues. Good to know, from the negative reactions, that there are enough non-objective emoters out there to confirm the likelihood of a major bottom. Sep 19 06:47 PM
    • Why I'm Closing Atwood Oceanics [view article]
I understand the frustration, but selling a deeply undervalued stock at a time when it is deeply oversold is not sound trading. It's love turning to hate at exactly the wrong time. It didn't take a year to make the move look bad, only a couple of days. Sep 12 01:24 PM
    • Why Don't Earnings Matter Anymore? [view article]
Agree fully with the thesis of the original article and with most of the comments. Eventually, value will prevail. Between de-leveraging of hedge funds who had loaded up on these stocks when they were momentum favorites, and speculators trading into oversold rallies by sectors that face long-term secular problems, GARP investors have suffered unwarranted damage lately. But strong and highly visible earnings growth combined with p/e expansion will make these stocks huge winners 12 months out. Sep 12 01:16 PM
    • Foreigners Selling U.S. Stocks: A Good Sign [view article]
Foreign investors are indeed an excellent contrary indicator. Good post. Aug 23 01:35 PM

Agree completely! I also have major positions in DRYS and RIG. Aug 20 10:50 AM

Excellent article, and your decision to buy oil service stocks now should be successful regardless of the direction of oil prices for the foreseeable future. China is likely to be very cautious about reducing subsidies for gasoline considering that its primary focus is now promoting growth. Aug 20 10:29 AM
    • With Help from California, Solar Gets Fired Up [view article]
SOL is a major holding of mine along with TSL and YGE. Also have stakes in SPWR (through CY) and CSIQ. Have owned SOLF in the past and probably will again. California is leading a trend in energy generation that will increasingly be embraced across this nation (and the world). Aug 18 10:18 AM
    • Chinese Hegemonic Effect Overtakes U.S.? Not So Fast [view article]
I would argue that the economic miracle in China is based more on their discovery of market forces than on their suppression of certain market forces, though I don't dispute the general conclusions of your analysis. I would also argue that the U.S. has peaked as a world power resulting from decades of instant gratification and trends of political thought that have the US moving in the direction of destructive socialism at the same time that so many countries are moving in the opposite and very positive direction of increased respect for free markets. • With Help from California, Solar Gets Fired Up [view article]
On all levels, fundamental, technical and political, the skies are increasingly sunny for solar stocks. Aug 18 08:56 AM
    • Time to Pull the Trigger on Four Oil Service Stocks [view article]
The technicals remain ugly, but the fundamental values are exceptional, the sector is very oversold, no other sector offers such high visibility of strong earnings growth at such low valuation multiples, and the political winds are becoming more favorable. Somehow, buying the sector here does not seem to qualify as "catching a falling knife." RIG is my largest holding in the sector, and I also love DRYS as an undervalued play on ultra-deep water drilling. Aug 17 05:59 PM
    • The Last Days of the Long Investor? [view article]
Mark, I share your frustration with today's market, but "logicalthought&q... has it right in his comment. I am heavily invested in the energy sector because I see so clearly (logically) the long-term bull-market case for this sector while also seeing so clearly the long-term headwinds faced by the retail and financial sectors, for example. So to see money flowing out of undervalued energy stocks into less undervalued sectors based solely on the rotational trading of hedge funds is extremely annoying. But fundamentals do eventually prevail, and the irrational behavior of others always creates opportunities for those guided by more rational thought. I traded the energy sector well when it was the overall market leader, frequently selling undervalued holdings on run-ups in the expectation of being able to buy them back on pullbacks. And although I've also done some selling of stocks that have broken key technical support levels, that selling hasn't been nearly aggressive enough to shield me from the pain of nonsensical over-reactions of others to those technical sell triggers. But I do at least have the satisfaction of being able to buy more of those appealing stocks at prices I'd never have thought possible. I had thought the bull case for energy stocks was so compelling that the sector would be able to ignore the bear market elsewhere. I was wrong. Aug 16 11:44 AM
    • Offshore Drilling Is Not the Solution [view article]
Kudos to those commenters who recognize Al Gore for the hypocritical fraud he is. No intelligent person believes the straw-man assertion that drilling is THE answer. It's merely one very important component of any intelligent solution that addresses both the short-term and long-term needs of this country. Aug 14 10:17 AM
    • Transocean Reports Solid Earnings, Time to Short? [view article]
The same technical "breakdown" occurred in July 2006 when RIG traded at more than 20 times earnings, yet that proved to be a great buying opportunity for the stock at $70. For anyone with more than a very short-term perspective, RIG is a buy today. Aug 08 08:30 AM
