  • Apple's Decline: Thanks, iPad Mini [View article]
Today's world conquering company can see a reversal quicker than one might imagine. Robert Stone wrote a novel with this example:

"“Bela Lugosi played Hamlet for Reinhardt,” the elder Drogue informed them. “They called him the greatest Hamlet of the German-speaking theater.”

“But over here,” Patty Drogue pointed out, “Abbott and Costello were waiting for him."

And, one could add, Ed Wood was waiting, too.

"Apple is a cyber-continent growing evenly everywhere on the planet."

We were slow to see it for what it is, and we're slow to see it for what it was. Notice that the Wintel ecosystem never collapsed. There was no announcement that it had passed into history, just an accumulation over several years of signs of decline. The ecosystem point is a good one, though. When the inevitable happens, the whole system will continue on for many years.

In some way it will be like an intellectual revolution. The old scholars don't change their minds, it's that the new ones have more adherents. I'll keep typing away at my desktop, but I and my PC are fossils. So it will be for the "new" ecosystem.
