Losing Patience with Target as Its Slide Continues [View article]
I own a substantial position in Target . . . actual shares, not options. And I have a significant unrealized capital gain in those shares! Further, I would like to continue to own them for the next 8 - 10 years because Target has true value for an investor -- a long-term perspective. If the speculators out there take your advice and buy up shares to trade in a few months after raping the company's assets that long-term perspective will be lost. Bill Ackman is NOT an investor. And I damned sure don't want him and his ilk running any company that I invest in.

Short-sighted, to say the least. That applies to Ackman and the author of this article. All too many "investors" like Ackman are really vultures who raid and run. Yes, he could make the stock price go up over the short term. His ideas, however, would weaken the company and its long term success. Target is a very well run company with a proven formula. That the stock price is lagging is of concern to speculators, but not to investors. Leave it alone and go buy some options on some not-so-well-run company Mr. Ackman!

Please get your facts straight if you're going to pontificate. "...could be Target Corp. (TGT), which lacks Wal-Mart’s purchasing ability and whose prices are significantly higher than Wal-Mart’s..."
Target's prices are not only not significantly higher than Wal--Mart's, they are in most cases lower on a quality-adjusted basis. Consumer's Reports has done several comparisons over the years and consistently found Target's selection, especially in basic clothing to be a far superior value. A tee-shirt that costs $3 and lasts for 5 washings is no bargain compared to one that costs $5 and looks like new after 20+ visits to the washing machine.
On commodity items they are virtually identical. Doing "comp shopping" for Target I find we have to raise prices to match Wal-Mart about as often as we have to lower them.

I think the National Federation for the Deaf (I'm sure there is one) should sue all radio stations to make sure a method is provided for deaf people to enjoy the radio, too. Oh, let's sue the Apple because deaf people can't use Ipods.

As a shareholder in a media company I found your article educational and well presented. You offered no real conclusion, yet provided me with several things to ponder.

Gee, last time I was in Target they had milk, cereal and diapers - and their price was lower on 2 of them than Wal-mart! I confess that I did splurge, however. I bought some toilet paper, too!
