The Leading Cause of Personal Bankruptcy [View article]
I am a moderate Democrat. I believe in Universal Healthcare for all American citizens. Healthcare is not free. I as an individual have an obligation to take care of myself. The health care system in America is not geared to keep you healthy. Our system is reactive as opposed to proactive. I am a type 2 diabetic in California. I cannot get health care insurance unless I am part of a group policy. I hate it when I hear people who are opposed to government intervention when they say they don't want the government between me and my doctor. They think it is better for the CEO of an health insurance company to be in between me and my doctor. I'll take my chances with the government. Every American needs to be in the system. The way the health care system is run now it cannot get any worse if the government runs it. If Canada's system is so bad then why haven't Canadians changed it. I'm sure people can come up with examples as to why it doesn't work. They point to trees in the forest. I say look at the whole forest. Anyway the US Government is the largest provider of health care. Go look at VA. And don't tell me that the government will ration care. If you don't have insurance your care is already rationed.
The Worst Case Scenario (Someone Has to Say It) [View article]
I lived through 8 years of Bush/Cheney and I never thought America was going to fall off the edge of the world. Guess what to all of the people who drink this kool aid and think the end of the world is going to happen under an Obama Administration. Read my lips. It isn't going to happen. America will still be here thriving whether Obama serves 1 term or 2 terms. Why is it you all underestimate how resilient America? Warren Buffett thinks the economic free fall that America is going through is coming to an end. Why is it Big Jake you never brought this up under the Bush Administration. All that money spent in Iraq. What did that buy us? Where is Osama Bin Laden? None of your 10 scenarios are never going to happen. Know why? Because America should never be underestimated! Ever! Go to the web site 538 and see how people voted based on incomes. America of, by and for the middle class.
Why Economists Have Downgraded Obama to Bush-Plus [View article]
President Obama has been in office for a little over 50 days. He has inherited a country so mismanaged by the previous administration. Two years ago Americans started waking up to the debacle that was going on. Wall Street and the Main Street Media think he has a magic wand and all will be well. Talk about living in a fantasy. I love America and capitalism. The free and fair market is a great economic system for this country to hang it's hat on. But why does Wall Street need to be so disconnected from Main Street. Isn't the American worker and the American work ethic something to believe in. Doesn't Wall Street, while still acknowledging that we live in a global economy, have an moral and ethical obligation to be responsible and patriotic to all American citizens regardless of their economic status? If we want a better America for our kids then now is the time to start doing the right things in energy, health care and education. That means for me reducing our consumption of non-renewable fuels, affordable health care for every American and access to a great education. If you are smart enough to go to college money shouldn't be a barrier. If we don't do these things then we will be begging for help from the People's Republic of China. They own 100 (maybe it's 1 or 10 trillion, does it matter?) trillion dollars of our debt from what I understand. How good is that for our kid's future?
From 2000 to 2006 the Republicans ran Congress. Bush gave the US no energy policy. I think Obama and bothe the Democrats and Republicans in Congress will now start doing the right thing. I think facts and intelligence will now run government in the US. Oil ain't going anywhere because in 10 years America will start seeing the results of a coherent energy policy. GM will merge with Chyrsler. You now the funny thing is when you're in the middle of the storm you can easily think the whole world is crashing and the sky is falling. I bet it felt that way at the beginning of WW2 and the Cuban Missle Crisis or even the crash of 1987. And guess what the sun still came up. I think 9 months from now things will look a whole lot better. I grew up in Los Angeles listening to rockets being tested that took us to the moon. Now my kids will grow up seeing America develop technology helping us to reduce our consumption of oil. And that is going to change the world. Just think, no more borrowing money from China to give to Middle Eastern countries for their oil.
Why Oil and Gold Are Headed Much Higher [View article]
I see the recession being deep and not long lived. Just the fact that oil is below $80 when a lot of experts were saying $200 was just on the horizon tells me very few have a clue. Globalization has changed everything and nobody knows where we are headed. But if I understand it correctly South America especially Brazil is doing good. Go figure. Gold will not go up but it isn't going down much either. Buy gold because it should be 1 part of your portfolio. And to Georealist, you want to talk handouts, look what Bush has done for the big 4 Financials. Free money. 4 years from now America will be looking great if Obama and the Democrats govern from the center. I can never understand people like you but then I never understood how Bush could tell us to go shopping after 9/11. Or how you can go to war and not pay for it. As I heard it today when Eisenhower built the Interstate Highway System for the US with taxpayer dollars. What part of that didn't contribute to a more robust economy for the United States?
Here I Go, Criticizing Warren Buffett [View article]
I think what Warren Buffett was trying to do was remove the "panic and fear" that was running the market. It's a pyschology thing. The madness of crowds was causing irrational things to happen. It's why we have the FDIC, to prevent run on the banks. And with regards to the federal government getting involved as far as I know the feds are responsible for the Central Bank. It's an Alexander Hamilton kind of thing. When doesn't the government have the right to get involved in the economy when it's falling apart. Seems like a national security issue to me. And to Mr. Perez, Dick Cheney ran Haliburton, Haliburton gets lots of government money. Do you think that might be morally incorrect? I'd buy a used car from Buffett before I bought one from Cheney.

to fuzzyshrimp. the pain you will feel by pulling the lever for a Democrat will be a more stable US economy, a bigger bank account and an increase in the value of your equities. And if you make $250,000 or more then yes your taxes will go up.
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [View article]
Have some faith. The sun will come up tomorrow. Yes, the taxpayers will be paying the bill but I bet a few years down the road it will be seen as the right way to go. I think P & B get it that if there isn't a pay off for Main Street then there won't be a pay off for Wall Street. P has not done a good job of selling it but when the final deal of the bail out is all worked out, it will not make anybody happy at first but down the road it will have been the seen as the right thing that did get done. N obody likes to take medicine but they all like what it does.
Two Types of Speculation: One Harmful, One Not [View article]
great observation. I'm a Democrat. America needs to make sure it is energy independent. Yes we need to continue exploiting oil here in the US. But we also need to reduce our consumption of oil. What's good for big oil isn't necessarily good for America. Opening up ANWR to oil companies doesn't mean that the oil gotten there will go to America. In a truly free market it should go to the highest bidder for the benefit of the shareholders of the company doing the drilling. But I as an American want ANWR to remain pristine and undeveloped for me and future generations of Americans. I grew up listening to the rockets being tested for the Apollo program. My parents would wake me up at 4:00 AM in the morning to watch the space launches. If America wants to change how it produces energy from non-renewable sources to renewable sources it can. And then we can share it with the rest of the world.
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [View article]
It isn't the unions that has caused the downfall of GM. It is healthcare costs for retirees. GM can compete against Toyota. It cannot compete against Japan. If we had universal health care coverage in this country and American companies could get out of having to offer healthcare benefits to it's employees then GM would be in better shape. And before someone starts screaming about socialized medicine let me state a few observations. Healthcare is not free. It costs money to provide good healthcare and money is a finite resource. Everyone has an obligation to take care of themselves by eating right, exercising and not smoking. (Tobacco companies use to get government subsidies, why shouldn't lung cancer patients) But every American citizen has a right to decent healthcare. One of the things that made America great was the availability of a free education to everyone, just not for the rich. Modern medical technology is expensive. Some CEO shouldn't get rich by saying no to the insurance company saying no to my medical care. Why would you want to be part of a society that put greed above the well being of it's citizens regardless of economic class. Let's have compassionate capitalism in America. Money isn't isn't evil but the love of money is or so they say.
U.S. Housing Market Forecast: 2008-2010 [View article]
I disagree on it taking at least 2. 5 years before we see a sign of the US housing market seeing a turn around. The US Presidential election will have a strong impact if Senator Obama wins. The first impact will be a draw down in troops in Iraq in a 16 month time period. Pain is still going to be felt on the sellers side but the market will improve. Still BrianD is correct when saying wahat a scary reality we have created for ourselves.
