  • Google's (GOOG) new share structure is a clear violation of its "don't be evil" mantra, according to Felix Salmon. Dual-class structures were illegal until 1986, and even afterwards, independent shareholders have generally been given the chance to vote on them. Ultimately, Google's move represents an attempt to "retreat back into its pre-IPO shell as much as possible."  [View news story]

  • "In effect there has been a significant shortfall in the overall amount of monetary policy stimulus since early 2009," said Fed Vice-Chair Yellen last night, suggesting even with all of its extraordinary measures, the central bank hasn't done enough. She believes ZIRP could stay in place well beyond the current target of late 2014.  [View news story]

  • "Not scared yet," asks a punter, putting up a chart of the VIX (VXX) going back a few years. The "fear index" has sunk to the level from about where it makes a seemingly annual charge higher - yesterday's big move up hardly registers.  [View news story]

  • TechCrunch's Devin Coldewey doesn't mince words about Google+, declaring it to be Google's (GOOG) "biggest failure by a big distance," a product that mistakenly tried to challenge Facebook (FB) head-on rather than undermining it via social sharing features. He also joins others in criticizing Google for "[losing] its status as a neutral party" in the name of promoting Google+ and other services.  [View news story]
Just an old techie Grandpa, but I find that I use FB about 95% more than Google+.

Apathy syndrome? I follow my kids and friends on FB and check Google+ about once a month or so.

  • Undeterred by the backlash to SOPA and PIPA (or perhaps looking for payback), the RIAA and IFPI are considering filing suit against Google (GOOG) over its displaying of links to piracy-enabling websites in its search results. The trade associations, who recently accused Google of indirectly profiting from piracy, want the search giant to lessen the prominence of links to "infringing" sites in its results.  [View news story]
GFL, Good Fricken' Luck !! Google has taken on firms bigger than RIAA and won. Search is Search, whether you're looking for 'Toy Story' or various politicians like Ricky Santorum.

  • Why I Am 0% Long Stocks [View article]
I don't think it's a Nash Equilibrium, but more like the Prisoner's Dilemma with each bankrupt country will look out for their own best interests. Greece will leave and default, and Italy will smile and think of doing the same. The other PIIGS will start to look at that, also. The Lifeboat is sinking and using more money to absorb the flooding waters will ultimately fail. [ sorry for the wierd analogy.]

  • The double-dip recession concept has been oversold, notes Legg Mason's Robert Hagstrom. "The data just one month ago had H2 growth coming in between 1% and 1.5%, now we're seeing estimates upwards of 2.5%." Investors should be scooping up big-cap, high-quality growth stocks. Right now you can "buy the future for free," Hagstrom says, with stocks priced today as if they're expecting no earnings growth over the next 3-4 years. His picks: Amazon (AMZN) and eBay (EBAY). • Apple Tops in West European PC Growth; Competitors Tank [View article]
Totally agree with JohnBerchick on HP going down the toilet. Apple has the touchscreen world locked up because of all the app's that it has in it's library. It's going to be like VHS vs BetaMax. The one with the most and best movies, and in this case, Apps, Wins the ultimate battle for the consumers money.
