  • "If you wrapped up all the $100 bills in circulation, it would form a cube about 74 feet per side ... in a hundred years, that money will have produced nothing. In a thousand years ... worthless," writes David Einhorn, taking aim at Warren Buffett's bear case on gold (after being the subject of an ugly attack by the Oracle's partner).  [View news story]
If you took all the $100 bills in circuclation, put them into a huge tank of water, let them soak for a week, then siphoned off the water, boiled it down, you'd have a sheet on the bottom of cocaine worth about $30 Billion Dollars?

    I'm just sayin...

  • Why I Am 0% Long Stocks [View article]
I don't think it's a Nash Equilibrium, but more like the Prisoner's Dilemma http://bit.ly/sZh0cE with each bankrupt country will look out for their own best interests. Greece will leave and default, and Italy will smile and think of doing the same. The other PIIGS will start to look at that, also. The Lifeboat is sinking and using more money to absorb the flooding waters will ultimately fail. [ sorry for the wierd analogy.]

  • A sub-15 VIX (Friday close 14.7) is rare, says Goldman Sachs, and it doesn't stay below that level for long (true post-2007, pre-crisis not so much). It's not just the U.S., but implied volatilities have dropped across every global index followed by the Goldman team. Another sign: The put/call ratio has declined to its lowest level in more than 3 years, as players pull off hedges. [View news story]
So, when will it reverse? When the Congress can't agree on the "Fiscal Cliff" in the fall? That's a LONG way away.

  • Shell has pulled all but the most necessary operational funds out of European banks, reports The Times. "There's been a shift in our willingness to take credit risk in Europe," says CFO Simon Henry, explaining at least part of the bid for 10-year Treasurys yielding 1.50%.  [View news story]

  • The VIX (VXX +6.2%) posts its biggest jump in a month, but isn't anywhere near the sort of level associated with real fear in the market. The index currently resides around 23, but spent most of 2011's late summer and fall north of 30. We may need an S&P drop of 30-35 points in a day for the VIX to crack 30, says Michael Palmer.  [View news story]

Then if they put the "Leave the Euro" parties in power, then the dominos start to drop,.. Spain, Portugal, et al.

  • The yield on JGBs falls to 0.815%, the lowest level since 2003. Folks of a certain age will remember that summer and remember the seeming impossibility of that level. We're not only back, but the rest of the world is headed there too. German 10-year Bunds, 1.43%, U.S. 10-years, 1.71%. At the short end, Germany has gone even further, its 2-years yielding 0.05% vs. Japan at 0.10%.  [View news story]

  • Google's (GOOG) new share structure is a clear violation of its "don't be evil" mantra, according to Felix Salmon. Dual-class structures were illegal until 1986, and even afterwards, independent shareholders have generally been given the chance to vote on them. Ultimately, Google's move represents an attempt to "retreat back into its pre-IPO shell as much as possible."  [View news story]

  • "In effect there has been a significant shortfall in the overall amount of monetary policy stimulus since early 2009," said Fed Vice-Chair Yellen last night, suggesting even with all of its extraordinary measures, the central bank hasn't done enough. She believes ZIRP could stay in place well beyond the current target of late 2014.  [View news story]
