All Trails Lead Back to Overpopulation
Indeed, overpopulation (a word virtually banned from the conventional lexicon, over the past decade or so) is the real driver behind much of what you describe.
I think it is also worthwhile, however, to say something about rising aspirations and consumption levels -- propagated by rich countries, large corporations, and elites worldwide -- which multiply the effects of population growth. Indeed, as we see in the United States, stabilizing the population can be neutralized by the supersizing of cars, houses, portions, and beds; by the proliferation of ever more throw-away packaging, "disposable" goods, and built-in obsolescence; by advertizing and peer pressure in favor of ever more consumption.
The great question before us -- as hard to crack as the population dilemma -- is how consumption -- and thus growth -- can be slowed, without massive economic disruption. Who has some ideas on this?
