  • Google Will Dominate Cars The Same Way It Dominates Phones [View article]
Doesn't android for cars means adverts on the dashboard? You're getting low on fuel and it may seem useful if the car tells you where to find the closest filling station (with the advert for a local store of course). Information about local businesses already is already being displayed in google maps.

  • Google makes new settlement offer to EU [View news story]
Perhaps it's necessary to consider that people buying the cheapest android handsets may not want to spend money on what google advertise or sell in the app market - either because they don't have much disposable income or just want a phone which does a few things the cheapest $5 handsets can't do.

  • Sell Google Before It Gets Buried By Competitors [View article]
It's one thing for an idea to be innovative in the short term, but what projects have the ability to become long-term drivers of profit? If I want a book I go and look on amazons website, for computer hardware it's repeat business on, for a smartphone I check the cellphone networks websites.

  • WSJ: Apple evaluating 4.8"-6" iPhones [View news story]
The simplest answer is to keep the phones physical dimensions as similar as possible while squeezing in a larger screen. Imagine being able to bring the edge of the screen out to the edge of the handset.

  • 3 Apple iPhone Killers [View article]
Samsung already have what the author might consider an ecosystem: App store, windows desktop application Kies. The kies app is pointless - trying to install updates reports "update not available". Whatever backup app you use won't recover your installed applications on most handsets as they require a major system configuration change - fancy reinstalling all of them manually? Apples itunes app can backup your device, update the OS and then restore all user apps and data - beat that samsung!!!

  • Samsung Galaxy Gear May Change The Apple iPhone Release Story [View article]
    Imagine this scenario...
customer "I'd like to buy a samsung watch",
salesperson "you have a samsung smartphone?",
    customer "yes, a model xxxxx",
salesperson "sorry that phones now been replaced by new ones, you need a new samsung smartphone then you can use the samsung watch"

The photo seems to show screws holding the front panel in place - absurd!!!

  • Apple sends out invites for Sep. 10 iPhone event [View news story]
quote: Is the "brighten everyone's day" remark a reference to the iPhone 5C's color shells?

quite likely, didn't Apple use a hint like this in the past when announcing a previous press conference?

"Other less-expensive components" like a lower resolution camera? If the product reviews I've read are representative, Apple could use a cheaper camera sensor in the 5C and still exceed most android phones. I sent back a Sony sola handset (midrange device) after trying it, the photos it took were awful.

of the 0.7% statistic for ios, how many were for jailbroken phones? (bypassing some of the ios security features to run apps not approved by apple)

If you want to avoid malware, avoid android smartphones, if you don't have that choice, install anti-virus software on your smartphone.

  • It's Time To Google The Future [View article]
Think of all those android smartphones which are running obsolete versions 2.3.6 for example - including those made by Samsung and Sony. You'll never get the latest and greatest of Googles gadgets and apps to work with them unless they're backward compatible. (anyone know what the earliest version of android works with google Now?)

  • Does Apple Really Need The Aluminum Cover For Its iPhones? [View article]
Android uses a "virtual machine" application as a container in which to run the users apps which means it's going to need more memory and faster hardware than Apples ios to run the same apps. When Samsung are able to market their phones by flooding the market with a range of devices available to end users a regular product refresh can become a marketing strategy rather than an opportunity to introduce new features - samsung galaxy ace original version, "c" version, "i" version and "m" version for example.

  • Facebook Faces Uphill Battle With Google [View article]
Set up an android smartphone and you need to create a google account for downloading apps. Perhaps not the most sensible idea to assume everyone's going to use Google+. I don't and what's going to discourage people is their app reviews being linked to their G+ profiles. Facebook does almost everything I need - why use an inferior social network?

  • Apple - The Most Important Variable [View article]
quote ' Apple not only has to fight Google with its ~80% smartphone OS market share ' - what about Samsung with their Tizen phone OS? The fragmentation of the android smartphone range based on the different OS versions limits what people can do with the cheapest phones and perhaps they should be considered as different operating systems entirely (gingerbread / honeycomb / ice cream sandwich / jelly bean).

  • Apple $700: Don't Get Burned Again [View article]
I've got an android smartphone and 3 reasons to think twice about buying anything based on android are:
    1. The first app you need to install is an anti-virus app (Sophos or Avast)
    2. System services display 'restarting' after using the device and it can get very slow - I reboot mine at least once a week to clear this
    3. The way the applications are run imposes an operating overhead on the device: user app runs inside a virtual machine (another app) which then runs on the device hardware. Put an 8-core processor in your smartphone or tablet and you still can't overcome the drag caused by this - it's a fundamental issue with the design of android. They should have taken the Java source code for user apps and compiled it to run directly on each device - not so hard as most are based on an ARM chipset.
