  • Playing The Mobile Ad Market With Google, Facebook And Expedia [View article]
Perhaps Googles "Enhanced Campaigns" project will be better than their current efforts which seem to have limited effectiveness. Even with feedback from my use of youtube the clickthrough rate is zero. Adverts on video or streaming services are so poorly written they don't engage with me at all. An informative and entertaining advert lasting 10 seconds on youtube is going to be of more interest and will have finished before I can click on "skip advert" compared to a mundane 30 second ad promoting something I don't want or need.

  • Is Apple Flip Flopping Over Heat From Its Enterprise Customers? [View article]
When I log on to my internet bank website a site certificate issued by Verisign is used to confirm the identity of the site I've logged into. What are Virnetx offering that a site certificate doesn't do?

  • Samsung Electronics (SSNLF.PK) says its Q1 profit rose 42% to a record high on strong smartphone sales. Net profit rose to a record KRW7.15T ($6.4B), up from KRW5.05T a year earlier. Operating profit rose 54% to KRW8.8T from KRW5.7T. Sales rose 16.8% to KRW52.9T from KRW45.3T, coming in in line with the company's guidance of KRW51T to KRW53T. The results stand in stark contrast those of Apple (AAPL), which earlier this week reported its first profit drop in a decade and forecast margins to decline in the current quarter ending in June. [View news story]
Perhaps the samsung / android fans should consider just how bad android apps can be when trying to promote samsung hardware - skype for android for example. Skype ought to be a must-have app, works fine on apple but is awful on android. When I replace my cheap android handset it's likely to be an ex-contract iphone4 - no viruses or problems with "insufficient memory to install app" errors when theres an 8gb memory card.

You say the iphone 5 is Apples first sales dud. Any idea what would reduce sales? Technical problems, quality control issues or customer perception that it's not as trendy as Samsung ?

  • Apple Exits The Steve Jobs Era, Bets On Engineering Of The Financial Kind [View article]
Would your company pay someone 3% per share dividend on all shares or 1.5% interest on a loan for the same value as those shares? That's what I think the buyback's about, if it increases the share price I see it as a bonus - manipulating the price of the shares wouldn't be limited to the fallout from automated trades.

  • Google's Growth Story Isn't What It Seems [View article]
Comparing Google with Apple is obviously inappropriate - Google is an advertising company relying on users interest in the adverts they're shown. What they're also relying on is users goodwill in accepting on-screen advertisements in exchange for services. At what point do the adverts become so intrusive users go elsewhere? You've spent $1,500 on Google Glass, are you happy to have adverts (most likely irrelevant?) on the tiny screen?

  • Apple Just Invested In Shareholders [View article]
quote " if it is a quality mutual fund... who cares if there is a small expense ratio (keep it to under 1.5% " - anyone who's invested in ETFs would regard 1.5% as a lot. Expense ratios for most are between 0.3% up to 0.8%. Ishares S&P500 value ETF charges 0.18%. I've got a few apple shares but have most of my money invested in ETFs or REITs. (the ETFs offer plenty of scope for diversification, and REITs for dividend income)

  • There Is Nothing Rotten About This Apple [View article]
quote " Android OS which has hardly been around for a product cycle " - I disagree. Samsung and Sony are still selling handsets based on android 2.3 (gingerbread). Some can be upgraded to 4.0 (ice cream sandwich), others are stuck on an obsolete OS. How many of these android handsets can be upgraded to future versions? My ipod touch, sold with ios 4.1 has been upgraded to ios 5 and then ios 6. One thing iphone users benefit from is not needing antivirus software on their handsets. P.S. android users should be aware of this bug with daylight savings time:

quote " 1 gbps solves any potential bandwidth problem with the streaming media centers of the near future. " - When there are lots of users watching streamed HD movies what bandwidth will realistically be available? It's one thing to offer 1gb per subscriber, another to have sufficient capacity upstream to support this.

  • Google Bets On New Business Lines [View article]
Googles products need to be best-of-breed for one simple reason. If a competitor offers something just as good without so much advertising then Googles users will go elsewhere. Even when I use gmail the adverts are seldom relevant to me.

" advertising virus " - there's also malware which is prevalent on the android platform. Sophos, Avast and Kaspersky offer antivirus software for android handsets. These include features to stop the phone automatically sending SMS messages to premium-rate numbers which cost you $1 or more per message.

quote " In reality the copiers or to coin a new phrase the samsungers " - seems like an appropriate phrase. Samsung seem to have tried to gain entry into all sectors of the market from the low-end 240x320 pixel screen smartphones only capable of running the obsolete android 2.3 up to the S4 (is it shipping yet?)

  • Apple (AAPL +1.6%) roundup: 1) Take this one with a big spoonful of salt: "Some Wall Street sources close to some Apple executives" tell Forbes contributor Gene Marcial some at the company are looking for a replacement for Tim Cook. 2) CIRP estimates the iPhone 5 made up 53% of Q1 U.S. iPhone sales, up slightly from Q4's 50%. Meanwhile, citing Verizon's Q1 iPhone mix, BMO (Outperform) now sees Apple's latest iPhone accounting for 55% of Sep. quarter iPhone sales, down from a prior 70%.  3) A Foxconn worker speaking to China Business claims Apple returned 5M-8M iPhones "due to appearance of substandard or dysfunctional problems." If you've got a well-diversified portfolio then Apple shares needn't make up more than 7% so there's plenty of scope for emerging markets / frontier markets / sector ETFs and REITs. If you think Apple's bad, have you seen Facebooks share price?

  • More on Apple: BGC's Colin Gillis is going contrarian, upgrading shares to Buy and setting a $500 PT (somewhat modest, compared with the PTs of other bulls) ahead of tomorrow's FQ2 report. "Jump in the fire, as any Apple good news, could boost up the stock," haikus Gillis, who has kept a guarded stance on Apple for some time. Separately, boutique shop Avondale has upgraded Apple to Outperform and set a $600 PT; the firm predicts a return to growth (10%-15%) and stabilizing gross margins in FY14. [View news story]
" Wall Street Analysts who also always have the long term interests of the company as their foremost concern. " - or are they just interested in short-term variations from one quarterly report to the next? How much of the share price changes is due to market sentiment versus analysts' reports?
