  • The Next Phase Of The Internet: Google's Global Domination With A Sneaky Edge  [View article]
I think Google have a bigger challenge than people expect when trying to show relevant adverts. Gmail isn't my usual email service and the emails don't have the same information I (willingly) share within Facebook.

  • Google Fiber Is A Growth Catalyst  [View article]
Google could make this work, just buy a cable TV company and run their own fibre through the existing pipes. The problem with 1 gigabit networks is likely to be the last connection between their network and the customers computer. Wireless networks (802.11g) only go up to 54 megabit and many computers or tablets come with wireless networking. How many people will want holes drilled in their walls for ethernet cables?

  • Production of a cheaper iPhone will likely start in June, says Jefferies' Peter Misek in an afternoon note that's helping Apple (AAPL +0.7%) outperform. Foxconn and Jabil (JBL) are expected to provide plastic cases. Misek and other sell-side analysts have already predicted a less costly iPhone will arrive this year, though some claim its case will use a composite rather than plastic. Meanwhile, Apple received top marks in J.D. Power's U.S. smartphone satisfaction study for the 9th straight time - its score of 855 is slightly above a prior 849, and well above an average of 796.  [View news story]
I'd expect Apple to use a composite case, plastic might give people the idea they're trying to compete directly with Samsung's entry-level phones.

  • When Should I Dump My Underperforming Manager?  [View article]
I've found that diversification using ETFs is the best way - low cost and a variety of investment options. Look at the "fundamentals weighted" ETFs on for example. I check if an ETF is a "direct replication" fund which holds the shares in the underlying index, some funds hold swaps (indirect replication) which are more risky. Agree on the under-performance due to high fees aspect.

  • A Google Credibility Gap?  [View article]
Their credibility gap might arise in part from their research into the glass project and self-driving cars. Privacy concerns and legal restrictions (texting while driving) could derail the glass project and the self-driving car doesn't seem suited to public highways. Once the bad publicity hits the share price might slide. The 10 day SMA is on the way down towards the 30 day EMA.

  • Will The X-Phone Kill The Android Monster?  [View article]
If Google can make the glass product then they shouldn't have any problem with a mid-range android phone. The nexus4 was a rebranded LG handset, if they can sell something costing £150 which is as good as a Samsung handset they could easily take market share.

  • Meet The Latest Threat To Apple: The Samsung Galaxy S4  [View article]
Samsung handsets are sold as samsung-branded devices with google services, no mention of android. Wait till Samsung dumps android in favour of tizen, some carriers are already involved - Do Samsung have a chance to be the key player here and challenge Google? Add Microsoft for email, and Amazon for an app store offering a free app every day.

  • Google Glass Already Banned: Why It Will Fail And Why You Should Not Buy Google On This Hype  [View article]
" So basically a $1500 webcam attached to my head? " - yes, streamed live to youtube, (owned by Google?) Once you get used to the technology you might even forget to take the glasses off when you go to yours (or someone elses) bathroom.

  • Google Might Have Decided To Put Out Of Business  [View article]
What would happen if Amazon are willing to offer Samsung a higher percentage of the revenue from music or app sales than Google? Would Samsung then include Amazons app store on their new phones? It's available from their website but unlike Googles app store isn't included in all handsets so the user has to install it manually. What counts against Googles app store is that it's got a lot of pointless apps (pranks, gimmicks etc.) as it isn't curated. Amazon are offering a free app every day which suggests they're trying to attract market share.

  • What If Google Glass Flops?  [View article]
Sony doing a virtual reality headset for PS3 games could be the ultimate must-have item for gamers. Designed for eyeglass wearers and without the safety issues of being distracted while driving a vehicle. How soon before wearing Google glass while driving is made illegal? (using a cellphone already is) It won't be a replacement for a satellite-navigation unit after that.

  • Apple Launching A Low Priced iPhone Would Be The Ultimate Sell Signal  [View article]
I think Apple have the talent to build an iphone for emerging markets which could be quite respectable. An ipod touch4g with GSM telephony and GPRS / EDGE data, without 3G / tethering / wifi-hotspot - what's the real cost of the extra circuits?

  • Google-Samsung Partnership: When The Hunter Becomes The Hunted  [View article]
Why would Samsung stick with android and Google for just a small share of advertising revenue? If Samsung promote tizen phones they're likely to get a greater share and more control of the tizen environment including media sales. Didn't Amazon copy android for their own use in the kindle readers and marketplace?

But Apple aren't selling the iphone 3gs any more. If they needed something to eliminate the competition in the entry level market, the 3gs could be it.
