  • Just Happened: Sunoco LP Analyst Day [View article]
my background is with susser so i am texas oriented. it seems to me that SUSS before the consolidation would be vulnerable, both in terms of gasoline usage as well as CS business, to potential layoffs in the oil patch and construction industries. they relied quite a bit on oil workers for their clientele. did you get a sense of how much the collapse in oil prices with the collateral impact on wages and capital expenditures will impact their business?

  • Crude Oil: Has The Price Paradigm Changed? [View article]
i would be very interested to hear your take on the impact these crude prices will have on companies such as NOV and CAM. my guess is that earnings will come in at or above projections but forward looking statements will emphasize the "difficult environment" theme which the market abhors.

  • Energy Transfer Partners' Return To Distribution Growth Was Predictable [View article]
was wondering why no mention made in this article about the proposed $1.8 bil merger with suss for which an s-4 was filed several weeks ago. the companies expect over $70 mil of synergies as a result of this consolidation yet, unless i missed it, there was no acknowledgement of this significant event in your report.

  • Should You Consider Floating-Rate Bank Loan ETFs In This Environment? [View article]
liquidity risk was not mentioned in this piece. in a declining market for these funds as shares are liquidated the fund must dispose of some underlying bank loans for which the market can be very illiquid. finally libor rates do not move in concert with the 10 year and these funds are generally linked to libor. nevertheless i own several bank loan funds but are aware of these risks

  • Berkshire Hills Bancorp (BHLB -6.1%) tumbles after saying it took a hit from spiking long term interest rates in Q2 - with tightening mortgage origination volumes and margins, impacts on commercial loan and interest rate swap revenues, and higher expenses as integration and efficiency projects were completed. EPS is expected at $0.48 vs. $0.55 consensus. The full report is expected on July 24. KBW downgrades to Hold from Buy. Previous: Berkshire is busy on the acquisition trail. [View news story]
my nose tells me there is more to this story. the cfo is out as of friday. i understand the impact of tightening on mtg initiations but the "impact on commercial loan and interest rate swap revenues" may be a euphemism for some bad decisions by the cfo.

  • Merger Arbitrage With Options: Eye-Popping Returns, But Not for the Faint of Heart [View article]
there is an anomaly here. if these professors are only using "cash" consolidations there is no reason to be long puts of the acquiring company. further study will show that, in cash acquisitions, the stock of the acquiring company will move according to the market's view of the impact on the acquiring company (is there earnings accretion, etc.). only in stock for stock mergers would being long puts of the surviving entity make sense.

  • The Five Best ETFs for a Falling Dollar [View article]
i truly believe recommending etf's with daily trading volume of such small amounts (EU under 1k a day) does a disservice to readers. the idea that one could say that EU is "a great place to keep cash safe" is only relevant if you're emptying your piggy bank to buy a few shares. any larger buys would distort this thin market.

i think it is counterproductive to recommend etf's with daily volume of 10k and 30k respectively.
