  • Activision Blizzard Must Manage Its New Movie Studio Carefully  [View article]
Video game films have a real cruddy history and a lot of Activision's better content either has very flimsy and generic stories that gamers care little about (Call of Duty, Titanfall) or muddied, complex stories that make it difficult to put into film form (Starcraft, Warcraft, etc.) I can't imagine this being a net positive. But who knows. Outside of Batman, comic book films were pretty poor performers until a decade ago. If ATVI picks and chooses their film projects wisely and conservatively it could work out.

  • Mr. Ackman's presentation fails to lift Valeant as Citron trolls  [View news story]
The option was for the purchase to be exercised at $0 (meaning they already paid the "full price" for the entity). As a matter of accounting they essentially owned Phillidor. From a legal perspective it's less clear and there is no de jure ownership. The only reason I can think of as to why you'd have a $0 strike price option is because you know the optioned entity is up to something and you want to do your best to avoid full liability for that entity's misdeeds. That's not exactly a good thing.

And Valeant has far too much debt to be a good target for acquisition. They're highly leveraged. Enterprise value is way above market cap.

  • Aetna closing in on Humana  [View news story]
Odds of AET/HUM making it past regualtors is very slim. ANTM/CI more likely, not a lot of overlap in terms of geography (most insurers are somewhat regional).

  • FCC to vote on net neutrality  [View news story]
What do you mean? The basics of the proposal (as occurs with pretty much all regulation) were posted nearly a year ago. That's how Comcast, Google, etc. get to do their own proposing/lobbying in response to.

Yup. Problem is most people here don't understand what the internet is, they think its a series of tubes. (Hint: Comcast is just your on-ramp, the backbone and other facets of the network are more complex than you think).

  • FCC to vote on net neutrality  [View news story]
No during dial up era it was a TII service, so this is generally just rolling back on Bush era de-regulation which makes sense (during TII-era you had competition in dial up, you had like 50+ ISPs, now in most locations you have 1 maybe 2 cable providers so abuse via market power is a bit more real).

  • Gilead Sciences declares $0.43 dividend  [View news story]
Rev. guidance. Argument could maybe be made that dividends are not overly appreciated in the biotech world where investors often prefer that cash go to acquisitions to drive growth, but that's a bit speculative.

  • Update: Danaher Is Set For Big Profits  [View article]
Love Danaher. They combine the acquisition-heavy, diversified business model of Berkshire with the lean enterprise model of Toyota. Acquire a business, punch up their margins big time by cutting fat, rinse, wash, repeat.

Really wondering what they do with their huge cash stockpile. Lots of talk of an Agilent buy. We shall see.

  • I'm Letting Amgen Cool Down Before Buying Any More Shares Right Now  [View article]
Good article. I managed to buy them almost at the exact bottom during the October dip and exited my position over the last two days (something I've pretty much never managed to do with other biotechs where bottoms are hard to pick). They're a great company with a relatively solid balance sheet and decent but not great pipeline and one of the least risky plays in a very volatile sector but given the overly quick run up and hedge fund interest I started to feel it got a bit toppy. Plan to buy back into them and CELG once they and the overall market returns to reasonable valuations on a forward PE basis; I don't see the risk/reward in buying many stocks at this point with the SP running up as it has although end of the year buying often lifts all boats.

Biogen got taken off Citi's most preferred pharma list. So other Bio's fell in a guilt by association manner, reckon algorithm's added to volatility.
