  • Hudson's Bay Wins The Bidding For German Department Store Chain Kaufhof [View article]
HBC under a $5Billion IMO is a buy, since the real estate ($11billion) alone would protect value. I find it too risky above $5B as the German market is going to be a difficult one

  • Nintendo's Real Catalyst Will Be Bringing Mario To Mobile [View article]
Nintendo's mistake was Iwata breaking years of tradition launching the 3DS and WiiU at a loss, when ALL previous consoles were priced to make a profit on the hardware alone. Luckily 3DS sales (HW + SW) looks and still is healthy. For Nintendo to switch over to mobile would result in a show of loss of confidence in the company's own mobile hardware leading to 3rd parties abandoning Nintendo's mobile consoles in droves leading to a death spiral for Nintendo's best performing division (past and present). The only benefit Nintendo could have is launching the old games at stupid prices (Square Enix style), this allows them to finally monetize the huge base of ROM torrent players on mobile phones while still developing exclusively for its own consoles.

Analysts and reporters overlook this fact and love to point out that Nintendo's problem lies in mobile when in reality that is not the case. Nintendo's problem lies on the home console lot with the WiiU hemorrhaging with a stupid brand and lack of third party support. Nintendo chasing mobile users would not be a positive for Nintendo and share holders. Analysts and reporters need to understand this. Imagine if Nintendo listened to critics in the past chasing other crowded sectors (PC gaming, Internet Web Browser gaming, Facebook Gaming)

  • Starbucks Is Vulnerable To Robotic Baristas, Capsules [View article]
Starbucks has something incredibly important. The brand is extremely strong. You don't see people taking instagram picture of their machine made coffee, but every minute someone is uploading a filtered picture of their frappuchino.

Robotic made coffee will be more a threat to Starbucks' competitors that do not have that strong of a brand image.

  • Wendy's (WEN +0.4%) introduction of its pretzel cheeseburger may have something to do with McDonald's (MCD -2.6%) tepid July outlook, says Janney's Mark Kalinowski who had downgraded the stock ahead of this morning's earnings. The restaurant industry as a whole is facing pressure, says RayJay's Bryan Elliot who recently downgraded a number of names in the sector. A cautious endorsement comes from S&P Capital IQ which reiterates its Buy, but is seeing "increased competition for consumers who are seeking value." Other names today: (JACK -1.2%), (YUM -0.9%). [View news story]

  • iOS 7's (AAPL) support for physical game controllers should worry home console vendors (MSFT, SNE, NTDOY.PK), thinks BGR's Jonathan S. Geller. A combo of iOS game controllers, high-speed 802.11ac Wi-Fi links, and Apple's AirPlay tech for the wireless mirroring of an iOS display on a TV (via Apple TV) could replicate a console experience at a lower cost, while also allowing gameplay to be continued on an iPhone/iPad away from home. For now, home consoles maintain a decent graphics quality edge. But mobile processors are quickly narrowing the gap. Nvidia's (NVDA) Shield Android handheld console also supports TV mirroring. [View news story]
Nintendo might not see profits of the great 2008 highs off the double punch Wii+3DS, but they hold the unique position of having great IPs that gives them a good position. If people want to play Pokemon,Mario,Zelda , they'll have to buy a Nintendo console.

  • Disney (DIS +1.3%) works out a deal with Nielsen to adapt some of the ratings firm's online measures for advertisers looking to market across different mediums. The bigger issue: With the network industry getting set to pitch shows for advertisers and set upfront fees - look for more deals as CBS (CBS), NBC (CMCSA), A&E (AMCX), Fox (NWS) and TBS (TWX) scrap to have every eyeball counted while big spenders like Anheuser-Busch Inbev, Procter & Gamble, and Coca-Cola argue against it by contending the two mediums don't translate. [View news story]
