How Much Profit Is Apple Making from the App Store?

Lets not forget the "RUMORED" release of a device from Apple.

IF that device becomes a reality the entire App Store landscape changes.

Why?

Because now you have a desktop level device. ie memory. storage and possibly numerous ports for expansion and or third party add ons such as the ability to add a larger monitor for gaming @ home.

IF this indeed happens it is game over for one company. My gut tells me Dell is in BIG trouble. In addition I had to do a double take on Nokia's #ers.... and yes Nokia is down a staggering 90% net from last year.... Not good for them. I wonder WHY? :-0

People.... or better yet Naysayers of all shapes, sizes and colors I say Apple is a long term holding that has the ability to go beyond $200 in the next three years.

In a earnings report for AAPL... Steve Jobs said .... I'm paraphrasing.....

We have the best App store available today... (that was roughly a year ago mind you...... & iTunes is the App Store.... which has been around since 2001) our App Store "MAY LOOK SIMPLE" but is anything but simple... our competitors are going to have trouble trying to emulate the ease of use and overall user experience of the Apple App Store...

So once AGAIN!!! we see the WANNA BES coming @ AAPL in full force... and to ponder the fact that all these other competitors were so smug and condescending to Apple's entry into the mobile space....AND NOW they are COPYING the idea of the company that they all scoffed @!!!!! What does that tell you? eh? Anyone? Bueller?

My educated guess is that RIMM's costs of such an App Store will be greater than Apples. Why? because Apple's iTunes Store has been around since 2001 and they KNOW the costs associated with digital content delivery and they have the BEST SDK ON THE PLANET get this thru your thick heads people... RIMM is hobbled by their OS and lack of understanding when it comes to their platform... 3 words... EASE OF USE!!!! I don't care how many more features a device may have, if its not easy to use then round file the thing.

On another note where are all these APPS going to reside on the Bold or Storm... their built in storage is VERY limited... to my knowledge you can not install a RIMM App on a micro card.

Mac OS X Leopard receives UNIX 03 certification

Mac OS X Leopard is now UNIX 03 certified, joining a very short list of official UNIX 03 vendors. This ultimately makes Leopard a more attractive server option for business and enterprise uses.

One of the big draws of OS X has always been the UNIX-like, BSD heritage of the operating system. Apple has always touted OS X as UNIX-based and played up the security, stability, and compatibility that comes with the BSD foundation. The company has also gotten in some trouble with The Open Group over Apple's use of the UNIX name, when in fact OS X wasn't actually UNIX-certified. All that is changing, though, since the upcoming Leopard release has received the UNIX 03 certification (PDF) as of May 18, meaning that Mac OS X 10.5 on the Intel platform is a "true" UNIX OS, rather than just being UNIX-like.

It may all sound like semantics, but the certification is actually quite important for Apple and for the OS. The UNIX 03 certification means that Leopard conforms to the Single UNIX Specification Version 3 (SUS), a specification for how things like the shell, compiler, C APIs, and so on should work. Of course, the UNIX 03 certification is only for Intel-based Macs, but I suspect that has more to do with Apple not bothering to get OS X certified for an older architecture. This latest news marks Leopard as the first BSD-based OS to receive the UNIX 03 certification, which is quite an impressive feat, and also adds Apple to a very short list of official UNIX 03 OS vendors (IBM, Sun, and HP being the others).

The fact that Apple can use the UNIX name more freely is cool, but the certification will have a far bigger impact on enterprise customers. Any software written for the SUS specification is easily portable to a UNIX 03 operating system, meaning that enterprise customers who need a "real" UNIX for their applications can now use Leopard servers if they so desire. Leopard's certification also gives developers another option for a development platforms, which could translate into some extra Mac sales. Things like the GUI may not be portable, but any code written according to the specification should be. This would make the UNIX 03 certification a big draw for developers and enterprise customers alike, by providing another (perhaps cheaper) option for developing and running UNIX applications.

OSX is simple to use yet is powerful and beautiful...IF you know how to harness that power. ie. Knowledge of UNIX.

Look @ Windows.....WHAT THE!!! BUT if you choose to run Windows on your Mac you CAN!!!!. THAT Flexibility is your choice IF you buy a Mac. IF you don't like it DON'T BUY IT. Stick with your Monkey Boy Genius and Tell Mr.DELL & HP to stop whining about licensing OSX and make up you own OS for your third rate copy cat ways.

These kids today HAVE NO CLUE. They don't even know what UNIX IS for crying out loud. But the Mac just works. Simple or Complex you only need one Box. Linux can run on mac hardware too. Linux is great but its so fractured in scope. No synergy. Lots of HACKS with omnipotent thought processes.

Even Linux Gnome UIs are trying to copy the look and feel of OSX.
Driver support for Linux is a MESS too.... Too many third rate offerings with support from the ULTRA GEEKY of cyberspace. Most people JUST DON'T HAVE TIME!!!!!! DUH!!! Keep it Simple Stupid.

What seems so simple when it comes to Apple in fact is anything BUT Simple. Competitors lack the vision of Apple. Its NOT about HOW MANY features. Its about the user experience. If your not a GEEK and don't want to be one its a mind !@#$% and time waster.... you want you computer to work RIGHT?.... and for the record from what I have studied, Vista did not work all that well. NOT FUN BY ANY MEANS. Computers are no longer a GEEK thing. Enter into the new age of computing... get a Mac. If need be run Windows on it then do it. Before long you will be booting up OSX and Loving it.

$30b is a good number and the numbers don't lie. That's CASH boys and girls NO DEBT for Apple and more in the product pipeline than ANY OTHER competitor out there.... DELL wishes they had the margins or for that matter computers Apple has.....Dell is @ the mercy of M$FT...and its OS... Apple is both hardware and software. Components may be similar but the experience and end use is a totally different story. Why? Because Apple was daring enough to Think Different and now all others are envious, bitter and write SMACK about a company that BUY THE WAY was NOT saved by MSFT. Do your homework Office for Mac was a revenue stream for MSFT that they did not want to go away.

Some valid points. However Linux is for the PC Tinker. yes some compelling features but the mass market appeal is minimal.

These kids do not have the patience today to deal with dowload patch r1.5 A-00021-G but before u run that you must first make sure that your firmware is up to date on the latest version fm 2.665-1 but that only applies to the Nokia e series 3 but does not include the series S which by the way needs a different firmware rev which is available only from Android exlusive Nokia site which has no affiliation with the G1 series made by HTC but does not include the upcoming G6 Andriod phones only available through Google's exclusive site.

This is so very true. These kids LOVE iTunes. Yes it has some quirks but nothing on the scale that the new MSFT App marketplace will encounter.
The kids WILL buy iPhones.... it has Exchange BUILT IN for crying out loud...

Look folks... MSFT to THIS DAY! CAN NOT get the Zune marketplace to take off.... MSFT DEVELOPED IT!!!! AND Can't get that right.

Name ONE (1) other OEM handset/smart phone Co. that owns a desktop OS that runs EXCLUSIVLY on their hardware (Desktop/Laptop AND Smartphone)?

As a side note Macs boot to OSX, Windows and multiple flavors of Linux and to ad insult to injury Apple is Certified UNIX. Snow Leopard will have exchange support built in and it will be entirely 64bit . It is just a shame IT dweebs can't see the light due to the fact that they have their heads so far shoved up their collective hind quarters.
