  • Is Nymox The Next Unknown Biotech Turned High Flyer? [View article]
I am leery of any company where one person, who is the founder, owns almost half the stock. If he gets hit by a bus, this stock will plummet.

  • The generic Flonase "gravy train" is just about over, Needham's Elliot Wilbur says, lowering FY14 EPS estimates for Hi-Tech Pharmacal (HITK -0.5%) to $2.33 from $2.78. The firm keeps a Hold rating on the shares but says the "comfort level … is rapidly deteriorating [and the stock has] limited upside potential … outside a major transformational acquisition or new generic approval." Although the downside is mitigated by a $100M cash cushion, the current price is "propped by [too] many 'what ifs'." (Previous: Fluticasone Propionate sales dent HITK's quarter[View news story]
Then why yesterday after the news did this stock make a major upward move? What am I missing?

  • Can Windstream Maintain Its Ample Dividend Yield? [View article]
The statements from the execs and the board are meaningless and subject to change at any time. Stay away from this dog. I am glad I got out at $11.25.

  • Optimizing Triple Net Lease REIT Investment Part 2: Dividends With Gladstone Commercial [View article]
I saw the same thing. This is not a good balance sheet for an REIT.
I would stay away. I note that their preferreds are paying a whopping 7.5% which gives you some sense of the risk.

  • Why I Am Long Stratasys Inc. [View article]
I really got screwed by this company. I am an early purchaser of this stock at $4.50. Great move I know BUT then came the merger. Same symbol - same price but this was a different kind of merger. The stock in the pre-merger SSYS was discontinued and the new merged company was treated as a new stock. I had to pay tax on the sale of the stock even though I still owned the same number of shares. I checked with my broker who was surprised by this but verified that this indeed was the case. My stock purchase price is now $70.05 and if I sell before 12 months Iget no long term capital gains, I like the company even with its sky high PE but I am pissed.

  • Will Warren Buffett snack on another company this year to go along with the mega-sized purchase of Heinz with partner 3G Capital? SA contributor John McCoy thinks J.M. Smucker (SJM), W.W. Grainger (GWW), and McCormick (MKC) all fit the Buffett profile with their wide moat and strong brands. A longer shot for a Berkshire Hathaway play could be Tiffany (TIF), right-sized for acquisition in a luxury sector Buffett has dabbled with in the past. [View news story]
It is hardly a bad balance sheet and the Folger's acquisition is paying off - even though I would not be caught dead drinking such swill. Good earnings in the last quarter.

Smuckers is also a multigenerational family business. The company is doing very well and has made good acquisitions. I see no incentive to sell.

  • Nathan's Famous, Inc. Valuation: New Licensing Agreement Provides Catalyst For Future Profits [View article]
I am almost certain they don't. I think it would be hard for them to enter most international markets since sausages while popular around the world, seem to be local in their appeal.

  • Compass Diversified Holdings Points The Way To A 9.1% Yield [View article]
They own several companies that are market leaders in their niche markets. They are also smart enough to sell some of their companies - most recently a temp agency.

  • Buy Coach On Market Overreaction [View article]
I seem similarities between COH & AAPL. Both have been flying high and seemingly ignoring the competition. Then the competition starts making a real impact on sales and both stocks plummet. Both companies have great balance sheets and loyal customers but some of that loyalty is eroding. The next quarter for both companies should be very telling.

Sales up but earnings and backlog are down for Q3. Decent but not spectacular balance sheet. Q4 may shed more light.

I keep thinking that ADSK may be a natural fit. I love this stock since my average cost is $4.54.

  • Cisco Targets Ruckus Wireless; Avoid New IPO [View article]
Profitability is not the same as a good balance sheet. I still predict a secondary offering within the year. Others may see problems since the stock closed below its IPO price and was down on an up day.

  • Cisco Targets Ruckus Wireless; Avoid New IPO [View article]
Even with the IPO RKUS will be bleeding cash and will have to do a secondary offering. Their balance sheet is pretty poor for a high tech company.

  • Should Windstream Cut Its Dividends? [View article]
I just don't see how they can sustain the dividend given their balance sheet. low growth, and poor earnings. Selling new stock issues is probably impossible. I sold my shares in May ($11.25) at a nice profit and am happy to be out. Another phone stock that is not much followed is WVT with a yield of 9.5%. Management seems to be expanding the company in the right direction and it would not surprise me if someone bought them out. Again poor earnings and a lousy balance sheet.
