Mike, I'm a sucker for a sale. My purchase yesterday was small in case I really screwed up and BP continued to tank. I'm okay with another purchase.....can't resist a sale!

Now BP is trading at 40.10 -- pays 5.6% dividend -- if the slide continues I will buy more.

I couldn't resist so I made a modest initial purchase of BP this morning @ 40.76.

  • Whole Foods: Comps Will Most Likely Improve [View article]
I agree that WFM has a lot of growth ahead -- from adding new stores and growing comp sales volume in existing stores. WFM is the best in the business, bar none.

You mentioned nobody is talking about mergers. Good point -- they bought the entire Wild Oats chain several years ago. It was publicly traded and billionaire Ronald Burkle was a major shareholder. WFM has a pristine balance sheet --from a purely strategic point of view they have the brain power and the financial ability to buy a competitor if it makes sense.

  • Verizon: Buffett And Few More Reasons To Buy [View article]
Maybe Warren sees what everyone is seeing -- a culture addicted to their smart phones -- especially the millennial generation. I'm long VZ and T -- and enjoying the dividends and share price appreciation. If a person buys right it's hard to goof up with VZ and T.

I plan to buy shares in both WFM and NGVC when a more compelling buying opportunity presents itself. I've also owned shares in UNFI which is the biggest wholesale distributor in the HF industry. UNFI has a multi year contract with WFM. It's another way to be involved in the growth of the natural products/organic foods space. I am also a loyal and frequent customer of my local Whole Foods store. I started working in the HF industry just out of college in 1973. Back then it was really small -- we used to joke that it was comprised only of hippies and older folks buying dietetic foods. We always hoped it would go mainstream. I really give a lot of credit to WFM for creating the inertia that has driven the industry to where it is now.

I am retired from the health food industry -- worked 24 years in it. I called on Whole Foods in 1981 when they had one store -- in Austin. It was the biggest store I'd ever seen as a sales rep for a dietary supplement manufacturer. It was not your typical hippie natural foods store. I saw something I'd never seen before. I watched them open more stores and gobble up others like the iconic Mrs. Gooches in Los Angeles. I bought shares many years ago.

I believe in their management team and their Board of Directors. IMHO, they will adapt to and positively respond to the evolving competitive marketplace. It may not happen overnight and that may translate to buying opportunities down the road. I will be watching for an entry point to re-establish my position that I sold last month.

A sidebar here -- I know the Isley family who started and grew the Vitamin Cottage chain -- now publicly traded as NGVC. These people are very sharp. Co-CEO's Kemper Isely and his brother, Zephyr grew up in the business. I've been watching NGVC for over a year -- the recent selloff may have further to go -- but, in the low 20's it's got my attention.

  • AT&T A Buy? No, Go Back To Sleep, False Alarm [View article]
I would love to add more shares <30. I'm 65 and T generates real spendable income. T is not a growth stock so it's important not to over pay for the shares.

As a side comment, I'm mystified by the sheer numbers of young people I see tethered to their smart phones. Everywhere I go I see it. I also own shares in VZ -- thanks kids!!

I would like to see a bit more of price risk taken of LO before initiating a position.

Observation: I was at Safeway in line behind a guy buying a pack of Marlboro Light (MO) yesterday. I noticed the price of the pack as it was scanned -- $9.85 + 9.5% sales tax!

  • Intel: Upside Potential Remains [View article]
That describes why I bought my new XPS 8700. My old Dell with XP works fine but XP won't be supported by MSFT after March. The retailer I bought my XPS 8700 from said they are selling fast. The performance with the i7 processor is lightning fast.

Intel -- the stock -- is not well loved, for sure. As I said earlier in this thread -- I'm a buyer for more shares if the market creates a compelling entry point.

I'm doing my part -- just bought a new Dell XPS 8700 desktop with 4th generation intel 7 processor. I am long Intel and -- like everyone -- would like to see some dividend increases. I may even buy more shares if the market creates a compelling entry point.

I would also like to congratulate you for your first article! I wish you the very best in your new marriage and your investing life.

Early in my life I was mentored by someone who had created a lot of wealth. The best advice he gave me was also very simple: the power of compounding.....and harnessing it when you are young.

I look forward to your next article.
