Russia is not unique. There is/will be a population decline in all of Asia and Europe now with total fertility rates of less than two babies per woman. Check out the U.N. reports on world population. The U. S., alone, in the northern hemisphere is expected to have a sustainable population growth, primarily because of immigration. How can population declines lead to anything other than deflation and stagflation? Shall we direct our eyes to the southern hemisphere?

    exsellside,
your idea that higher taxes will help because of larger deduction is similar to this idea: let's put rocks in our shoes so it will feel good when we take them out.

  • 13 Agriculture Myths Busted: This Bubble Is Ready to Pop  [View article]
GTC, Check the demographics, the present birth-rate is less than 2 worldwide. By 2050 the population will decline absolutely and will spiral downward at a geometric rate. Is there anything on the horizon that will cause birthrates to increase? I doubt it. Russia has already tried a "stimulus" program to encourage population growth. Whether it works remains to be seen. People like Jim Rogers are as old as the average farmer in Nebraska, and they have a short-term view because of their age.

Brad, you seem to be agreeing with those who say the recovery will take as long as the FDR "solution" or the Japanese "lost decade(s)".

Good article, but short-term I hear that excess water in the corn and soybean fields may reduce supply, at least in upper midwest.

  • Why Wal-Mart Hirings Do Not Help U.S. Economy [View article]
Don't forget the benefit to the consumer. Being able to buy Walmart merchandise at a lower price is a good thing--like being able to buy gasoline at a lower price or having a tax cut which brings about an increase in tax revenues to the government. This is not a zero-sum game where we are losing because Walmart is winning. It's win-win with everyone better off because of the existence of Walmart. I think I just talked myself into buying some Walmart stock!

  • Were the Agencies Responsible for Recent Bond Market Price Activity? [View article]
What do you think of the other idea that perhaps China is unloading longer-term treasuries and going to short-term treasuries with the proceeds? If China is worried about a cheaper dollar in a few years, when the longer bonds mature, that would make some sense.

Don't you think it was just end-of-month window dressing by the funds? I don't expect to see any lasting effect.

  • The New Velocity of Money [View article]
Good story. How about this variation on that theme: Instead of a rich Russian, it is a Chinese bond-buyer. Instead of going upstairs to inspect a room, he just sits in the lobby until the maturity date, then gets his money and departs. But I'm afraid in this case, everyone has more debt, not less.

Check yor own math, mwfall, that's a 1.0516% increase--close enough to one percent for reasonable people.
