    • Sprint's 'Against the Odds' Turnaround Looks Less and Less Likely [view article]
xnext - I am a former Nextel employee from Virginia that chose to move to the OP campus. Many of the Nextel employees either resented the merger or they did not think moving to KC was a good career move. If you are a high-tech worker there is no comparison between the Washington, D.C. area and KC; there are far more opportunities in D.C. I knew that and it was my primary "con" in deciding whether or not to move. For me, I was excited about the merger, but that's not why I moved. I moved for quality of life reasons. I was tired of slugging through Northern VA traffic everyday. I was tired of the expensive real estate and I was tired of the rude people (I am a NoVA native, so I can say that!). From that aspect my move to KC has been a success; I have a 15-minute commute to work, there is no traffic, real estate is more reasonable, and the people (overall) are a whole lot friendlier. I get to take my son to school everyday and even participate in his sports practices and games. I could never do that in NoVA unless I planned my whole day around it.

I miss what we had at Nextel, we were winners, but we didn't have it all figured out and no one should pretend that we did. Everyone at Sprint has a tough job right now, because it is tough playing for a losing team. The merger was still a smart thing, but the lack of execution post-merger is embarrassing. Hesse has the right ideas and vision, it is now a matter of finding the people who can execute the plan and turn the ship around.

Ed - I have lived on the East Coast and I have lived in the Midwest. I have worked for Nextel and I have worked for Sprint. I was excited when the Sprint-Nextel merger was announced and I picked up and moved my family from Virginia to KC. My only reservation in doing so was, "What if things don't work out with this merger? What are my options for employment (high-tech or telecomm) in the KC market?" My initial fears have come true as the company is sputtering and there are NOT many options in this market for high-tech and telecomm. Add in the downward turning economy and it is even worse. Many, if not all of the companies lauded by other responses are laying off workers...just as Sprint is doing.

I passed on voluntarily leaving Sprint earlier this year because I believe we DO have the assets that will enable us to return to greatness. I did not move my family half way across the country to quit. However, your evaluation of the employee morale and management attitudes is 100% on the money. Hesse needs to initiate sweeping management reductions/changes, and there are still more unproductive, change-blocking individual contributors that can be removed. I am sure I will receive flaming responses to this, but it is realistic and it is the truth...we need more of both at Sprint right now.
